“Becky.”

Becky's jaw loosened.

"Non?"

The years had changed Non. Gone were the bright, fiery eyes that she had admired six years ago. Gone was the confident, lively aura that made him attractive to Becky's eyes. In place of them were hard, mean eyes and an older, experienced cynical mood emanating around him.

"Long time no see!" He chuckled menacingly.

“You… you did this?” Becky asked, aghast at the twist of events.

Freen was staring at the two, utterly confused as to what was going on.

"Just doing my job."

Becky plucked up her courage and looked into his eyes. She could hold her own ground now. “How have you been?”

He flinched as though he had not been expecting a question like that, "Well, the military changes you."

"What happened?"

"First sign of trouble and they will label you as damaged goods. Write you off as honourably discharged punks. Well, we have to survive somehow."

"Whatever happened this isn't the way."

Non sneered, "Shut up or I won't hesitate to shut you up."

She couldn’t be sure how he had changed. He had always been cunning. Had he learned a little more compassion? Or had he lost the last thread of humanity in the past six years?  There's no way she can fight her way out of this. It would be best to talk, get him listen. She had never doubted his love for her, maybe she could use that.

“Fuck.” Non looked at the men lying helpless on the ground. “Useless idiots. Can’t even grab a girl without giving me problems.” His eyes shifted to Freen, “You shouldn’t have been there.”

"Don't you even dare touch her." Becky threatened positioning her infront of Freen.

"Playing the hero, I see." He chuckled.

Becky held her tongue. Pissing him off was not a good idea.

He lowered his gun, kicked dirt at one man and snarled at them. “Get up and fix yourselves. Stop sitting there groaning like a bitch.”

Becky moved towards Freen under the watchful eyes of Non, "It will be okay, Freen."

“Help me, Becky. Quickly.”

Becky loosened the restraints as soon as her hands were freed, Freen threw her arms around Becky's neck.

“Becky…” She sobbed. Withdrawing from the embrace Freen cupped Becky's face in her hands, “Are you okay?"

Becky leaned against her forehead and whispered, "I'm okay."

“Enough. Shut up already,” Non snapped from behind.

"Can you try standing up?" Freen nodded. Becky put her hands under Freen's arms as support and helped the surgeon out of the van and onto her feet.

Becky eyed Freen closely, taking in the discomfort, she was clutching on to her stomach and trying to put all her weight on to her left side. "Are you okay?"

"It's just a bruise." Freen shrugged.

Freen turned her attention to Non, who was curiously watching the two, "She needs medical attention." She pointed to Becky, "You hit her in the head for God's sake." She yelled.

“Shut her up, Becky.”

A thousand questions flashed in Freen's eyes.

“This is not the way I wanted to do this but,” Becky nodded at the man who went back to pointing a gun at them, “He’s the ex, I told you about.”

Freen stared at her, mouth opened. How many of these exes are there? She wondered.

Becky didn't do relationships. Out of the two people she actually loved, both turned out to be her worst nightmares. First Jane, now Non.

"The high school sweetheart?" Freen wondered out loud.

Becky nodded in reply.

“Move them inside,” Non barked at his men and they trudged to them.

The man had a makeshift bandage around his wrist and the meanest intent in his eyes. Becky was expecting to be cuffed or punched but Non barked another order, telling the men not to lay a finger on them. The men did not look pleased with the order but they obeyed.

They were pushed inside the house, neither of them recognized their surroundings. It seemed abandoned. They were directed into a room, which had nothing except a mattress lying in the corner.

“Don’t bother trying to escape. I’m not interested in hurting or killing you but I will if I have to. Got it?”

Becky nodded along with Freen and Non relaxed his stance.

“Good. Don’t give me any trouble and I won’t give you any.” Non cast a meaningful look at Becky.

Becky could feel Freen's eyes on her but she kept her eyes on Non. She said nothing. The men were staring at them curiously and she didn’t want them to know more than they had to. Satisfied with their promise of compliance, Non retreated outside the room, bringing his men with him.

Beside her, Freen was disturbingly quiet.

"You okay?"

Freen nodded, her lips pressed thin.

“Don’t worry,” Becky whispered again. “If Non says he won’t hurt us, he won’t.”

"You have way too much trust in someone who kidnapped us and is holding us hostage."

"I just know him, okay?"

"It's been six years Becky, a person can change in six years."

“What are you talking about over there?” Non was on his feet, walking towards them.

To Becky's surprise, Freen spoke up, “Why did you kidnap us? Is it for ransom?”

Non gave them a hard look and for a moment, Becky thought he was going to lose his temper but he answered the question. “No.”

“Then why?”

“Someone paid me a lot of money to hide you for a while.”

“But why?”

Non rolled his eyes. “Bitch, I don’t ask questions. I just do my job. So just be good and I’ll release you soon enough.”

"Here." He extended a plastic kit to them, "It contain medical supplies. You are both doctors, I'm pretty sure you can handle it yourselves." He said as Freen took it from him.

After throwing one more hard look at them, "Don't try anything." Non turns around and leaves, locking the door behind them. Freen looked around immediately trying to spot any way of escape but found none.

The day's events were getting to them as they found themselves laying side by side on the mattress. With all sorts of thoughts and mixed feelings swirling around in her heart and mind, Becky lifted her head and put it on Freen's shoulder, Freen shifted so she fitted snugly and put an arm around Becky. In a strange way, this was almost comfortable, their fight long forgotten, the hurt they caused lingered but still they found comfort in each other's embrace.

With each other's soothing presence they soon dozed off not knowing what awaits them in the morning.
