Chapter 34

As a surgeon, you are trained to fix what’s broken. The breaking point is a start at work. But in our lives, the breaking point is a sign of weakness.

And we’ll do everything we can to avoid it.

Lux, Becky and Irin are in the common room sitting on the couch. While Becky reads the paper and Irin sips coffee and stares at her phone, Lux keeps eyeing Friend on the other side of the room, an increasing frustration bothering her.

“She‘s been ignoring me for weeks. Seriously?” Lux whispers harshly.

Only then Irin starts paying attention to her and sees who she was referring to. “You told her you were afraid of people judging and wanted to take a step back, she’s giving you what you want.”

“I didn’t ask for the silent treatment.”

Becky turns her attention from her paper to Lux. “Maybe you should just talk to her. I mean, if she’s so serious about you, why don’t you give it a shot? Just move in with her.”

“Becky, do you know what the other interns say about you and Freen?”

Irin giggles while Becky looks between both girls with a worried face. “Wha-what do they say?”

“That you’re the bossy student with the kink and that Freen's very...bendy.”

Becky gasps in shock while Lux keeps choking her laughs in the palm of her hand.

“The one time I have sex in the on call rooms I get caught?!” Becky whispers harshly. Her face becomes serious. “Do you...know about the...”

“Yeah, I know.” Irin says amused.

Becky hides her face in her hands. “Oh fuck.”

“Yeah, you say that a lot too.”

More laughter.

Becky throws the paper at Irin, and at the same moment Dr. Heng enters the room, followed by Mind and Billy.

“You three. You’re all at my service today. Follow me.”

When they arrive in the conference room, there are ten more doctors waiting for Heng to explain what was that about.

Lux freezes as soon as she sees Friend talking to...Faye? Are they together or something?

“What is Faye doing here?”

Freen who joins them then hears her and turns around to glance at her. “She’s here for Heng's project.”

Lux keeps staring at the two of them chatting and smiling as if they were still on good terms, as if Friend didn't destroy her marriage and maybe they really were. She can’t help but feel this rush of jealousy hitting her. She almost wants to storm in between them and drag Friend away from her, but she can’t do that.

She has no right to do that.

Noey is there too, and soon she approaches Irin with her charming smile.

“Urassaya, fancy seeing you here.”

Lux frowns and looks at her with a face with irritation, “We all work here.” Pointing out the obvious.

“Are you ready for games night?” She asks Irin.

“Oh yeah, you know, I’ve gotten so much better...I’m going to crush you.” She says.

“I wouldn’t bet on it. You can win over the others but you’ll always lose against me.”

Irin looks at her in a challenging way. “We’ll see about that.”
