Two Months Later,
James made Winnie an appointment with her OB after she kept coming up with excuses not to go.
"James it's probably nothing." She said as they were headed to the appointment.
"Winnie baby I know and you know these things need to be looked at. And it very well could be nothing but given the fact that your sister has had breast cancer and your mother I'm not risking it." He said
"And they beat it, but my aunt didn't and neither did my grandmother. What if I'm the one that doesn't." Winnie said
"We are done with this argument Win." He said
They finally arrived at Dr Harper Tomlinson's office which was Winnie's OB.
"Ok, Winnie I do feel some lumps. Let's go do a mammogram." Dr Tomlinson said
Winnie followed her to the mammogram room, and did the mammogram. Dr Tomlinson immediately saw the tumors. Winnie went back to the exam room where James was.
Dr Tomlinson came in, "Ok we are sending you to the hospital to do a biopsy. We saw several and I have an opening in 30 mins." She said
"How many Harper?" James said
"We found 4, one of her breast has 3 could mean it started to grow unnoticed..and spread. Once I get your results we will see what we need to do from there." Dr Tomlinson said
"Ok..I guess James ask your sister if she would mind to pick up James from school." She said
"Already on it baby." James said as he texted his sister.
James waited in the waiting room while the biopsy was being done. An hour later while they waited for the anesthesia to wear off, Dr Sansa Tanner walked in.
"Hello, I'm Dr Sansa Tanner. I'm your oncologist." She said
"Hello.." Winnie said as she sipped her water
James took her hand as they prepared for the news.
"So, I'm going to rip this off like a bandaid. You are in Stage 2 breast cancer. I seen in your medical history that this runs on the maternal side of your family." Dr Tanner said
"Yes.." she said softly.
"Ok, we are going to start chemo and radiation." Dr Tanner said
"If it doesn't work I want a double mastectomy.." Winnie said
"Win let's not do that right now. We need to be positive.." James said
"Your husband is right. We don't need to be thinking about the negative. We will meet in my office next week for a schedule set up." Dr Tanner said
James signed the discharged papers, and they left the hospital. On the way home Winnie wiped a few tears
"James if I die please please promise me that you will move on and re marry." She said
"Baby? Let's not do this.." he said
"Just promise me James! Damn it I need to know that you and the kids will be ok! I need you to promise me this cause you will need help!" Winnie snapped
"Ok ok let's not get upset..I promise." He said
He got her settled in at home, and told the kids to let her rest. He went to work a shift at the hospital. Joe Rogers found him puking in a trash can from anxiety and stress.
"You alright Barnes?" Joe said
"Not really no. But um..we need you and Sarah to come over for dinner tomorrow. We need all friends and family over." James said
"Alright we will be there." Joe said
James found Paul and Darlene Wilson and let them know too.
