amaris had always loved the book celler that stood on high street ever since she could remember. back when pip would drag leanne and amaris inside and demanded that her sister got at least one book. amaris had to give her sister cudos for that because while pip had hoped that amaris would grab a educational book amaris instead grabbed a book that made her fall in love with literature. she loved going to that book cellar because that's where her love for books started she loved it so much it she had eagerly pulled her boyfriend into that shop mere days after they became official because she had wanted to share something so important to her with him.
pip stood on amaris' right while Conner lagged behind the two,not fully on board with 'this whole catfish theory'. even when pip and amaris pointed in sync that jamie was on his phone a lot in the past few weeks. Conner let their words flow through one ear and out the other though he did note that it was freaky that they spoke directly in sync.
"it fits everything we know so far," pip says with a sigh, "late-night phone calls. and he’s been protective about no one seeing his screen, which makes me think that his relationship with this leila, this catfish, is a romantic one. jamie was probably feeling vulnerable after the whole nat da silva situation; it’s easy to see how he might fall for someone online."
"especially someone using stella chapman’s photos." amaris adds and pip sends her a look. aware of how amaris had the tendency to compare herself to many of the girls in their school.
"i guess. just not what I expected." Conner says with a shrug and amaris had to hold back a groan.
she didn't like how it was this time around she didn't like how Conner was so unsure of everything even if it made sense she didn't like that every time he shrugged off their explanation amaris felt doubts creep into her mind and make her anxiously think over everything. she loved Conner, he was her bestfriend but she wished despretly that it was Ravi that was with them instead because ravi -even from the first time he met them- knew exactly what to say or not to get the fitz-amobi's brains into thinking clearly. he followed them down any thought roads and jumped off their tallest conclusion cliffs. he knew when to tease and joke to pull them from their minds or when to just shut up be there.
amaris had called him, after they talked to stella, he was still at the courthouse watching the trial but he listened to pip and amaris retell the entire interview and then he talked them through all their thoughts until the three of them came up with one conclusion that fit.
"it’s the only explanation that fits the evidence we have," pip rewords her same sentance she had said three times before, "hunches have to follow the evidence, that’s how this works." pip stopped just before the book cellar door, "when we’re finished here with this potential sighting, we’ll go back to mine and see if we can find this leila online and confirm the theory."
"and let us do the talking. it works better that way." amaris says with slight aggravation.
"yeah fine, i said sorry about the Stella thing." Conner says defending himself.
"we know. and we know you’re just worried." pip says softly,"just leave it to us. that’s what we're here for."
as amaris opened the door a bell sounded from above her head, "hi," a voice came from the counter, "oh it's you. hi." he moved from behind the register and towards the group. "i’m harry," he held his hand out to amaris who shook it before pip did the same, "scythe, the one who emailed you guys."
"yes, thank you so much for that, we came as soon as we could, we ran out after final bell." pip smiled before gesturing to conner, "this is connor reynolds, jamie’s brother."
