amaris had always known how to read people, she had done it her entire life from the moment she was born she read people. as a todler she would console her mother and pip whenever anything upset them in the slightest despite being so young. so really it was no surprise that she knew the exact moment when joannas heart started to break.

it wasnt when pip told them that he was a the calamity and left at 10:30 or that he was seen on the phone mentioning cops or about how jamie had followed someone from the memorial to said calamity, it wasn't when pip had informed that jamie had been fired two weeks ago and had been lying about it. no it was when pip said three words: life or death.

joannas entire body tensed, her skin paled, her posture slacked and amaris swore that she saw some of joannas light leaving her eyes and mixing with the bad kitchen lighting- of course amaris knew that look, she knew that pips words had given a heartbeat to Joannas worst fears and once the heartbeat started their was really no way to kill that fear, sure maybe moment the heartbeat would flatline or almost flatline but it always came back and that fear would be stuck in joannas head forever just like mari's were trapped in hers.

"but we don’t know what jamie meant by that." amaris was quick to say, wanting to offer some sort of comforts, "it is possible he was exaggerating so he coul minimize the trouble he was in, or to get our mom to sympathize with him," 

"do you have any idea what Jamie might have needed the money for?" pip asks softly.

"wednesday two weeks ago?" conner asked as he thought back to the date, "it’s not like there were any birthdays or occasions coming up which he’d need money for."

"i doubt Jamie intended to steal money to buy birthday presents," pip tried to speak gently but it still came out harsh enough for amaris to nudge her, "do you know if he had any debts he might have needed to pay off? phone bill? we know he was very attached to his phone in recent weeks." pip asks her voice losing the slight harshness it had before

"i don’t think so." joanna spome up and even her voice seemed to half lost its life, "he was on a good salary at the estate agents, i’m sure that more than covered his phone bill. it’s not like he’s been spending more than usual. jamie hardly ever buys anything for himself, not clothes or anything. i think his main expense would just be, well, lunch."

"kay, that's fine me and pip'll look into it." amaris knew how to keep her voice soft even while still staying on topic.

"where has Jamie been going?" conner asks, "when he told us he was going to work?"

"we’ll also look into that," pip answers before suggesting, "maybe he was just getting out of the house, so he wouldn’t have to tell any of you what happened. maybe he was working on getting a new job, before he told you he’d lost the last one? i know it was a point of contention between jamie and his dad, maybe he was trying to avoid another argument about jobs."

"yes," Joanna nods, "arthur would have been angry about him losing another job. and jamie hates confrontation."

"skipping back to the calamity party," pip said changing the subject, "do you have any idea who jamie could have been on the phone to? someone who might have asked him to do something?"

"no." joanna shakes her head, "it was none of us."

"zoe?" amaris suggests

"no, she had no contact with jamie that day. the only person I know jamie calls regularly is nat da silva." joanna answers before adding, "or it used to be."
