pip said she had needed a break, needed to do something that took her mind off of everything related to andie bell so here they were walking, side by side as barney ran ahead of them through the trees. both lost in their own worlds, earphones in, pip was listening to a true crime podcast while amaris was trying to figure out why every fucking song made her think about ravi. every. single. song.
when the sky got darker, pip and amaris dipped off the track and through the trees to get to the road faster, once they had made it they both unplugged their earphones and put them away.
"barney, come on." pip calls.
a car flew down the road momentarily blinding amaris in the headlights.
"barney barns, lets go!" amaris called this time.
pip whistles before yellin, "barney! here, barney!"
there was nothing, no paws running through the leaves, no golden flash of barneys body. amaris felt cold fear settle in her stomach, "barney!" her voice was shakey.
amaris and pip run back the way they just came from shouting,"barney!"
"pip. pip. get mom and dad okay? ill stay out here looking." pip nods and runs off while amaris continues to yell for barney. she wasnt quite sure how long she ran threw the woods screaming barneys names, but her her throat felt raw and her voice was scratchy. her lungs felt as if they'd been tied to a bomb and blown to pieces. she couldnt breathe, both from the running and the fear that barney was gone. her chest heaved as she stopped momentarily, praying that her parents qere on their way and would know what to do.

back at the amobi house victor had held and reassured his daughter that they would find barney, and then it clicked. both of his daughters went on that walk with barney. so where was amaris.
"pip. pippa where's your sister?" he asks calmly although worry was creeping into him.
"shes- she still out there looking for barney."

amaris hated running. she hated it so deeply she refused to participate in anything that would require her to run, but every now and then-- if the situation was dire enough-- she would run and run until whatever reason she had for running was resolved. her entire body ached as she ran all throughout the woods, the branches hit her face and exposed arms leaving tiny scratches, but she wasnt worried about them. no, her entire mind was focussed on her dog. all of her worry, all of her energy, it was all focussed on barney. she was so focussed on barney she hadnt even noticed the rock in her path until she tripped on it.
she felt the rock clad ground scrape her leg as she slid on it, she just barely caught herself with her hands. she didnt have enough energy to stand so she sat on the cold rocky forest floor her legs, that were smeared with dirt and blood, were strertched infromt of her, she looked down at her scraped hands and then up at the trees, trying so despretly to swallow her tears. her lip quiverd and her hands shook, her entire body was freezing and only now did she realize that.
"amaris!" victors voice sounded through her ears and his arms wrapped around her, she closed her eyes her chest still heaving as he helped her up.
"dad, barney- we need to find barney." she mumbles as he wraps his thick padded jacket around her.
"its okay, mars, we'll find him. i promise." he whispers.
the walked and yelled for barney for two hours untill victor said they needed to go home.
"we can’t go home until we find him!" pip sniffs
"listen. it’s too dark now. we will find him in the morning. he’s wandered off somewhere and he’ll be ok for one night." victor says.
"no, no we have to find him, dad!" amaris voice was shakey and filled with fear.
"mari, you're tired and cold and dirty, we'll go home get some rest and then look again tommorow."
amaris had taken a shower, cleaned and covered her cuts, and then went to bed right away, she couldnt sleep though. she was so tired but she couldnt sleep. all she thought over and over again was that Unkown had warned her and she didnt listen. why didnt she just listen?

---

amaris was way beyond tired, she didnt even know how she was still standing they'd been looking all day and josh and leanne had put up posters in town. it was mid afternoon when ravi texted her, hey moon, i just missing posters for Barney up in town. are you ok? do you need help?
she didnt know how to respond, because no she wasnt okay and as much as she wanted him next to her helping her look she couldnt help but feel like if she was paying more attention to barney instead of thinking about ravi then maybe barney would be with them right now.
when they got back home amaris sat at the kitchen table eating her Thai food, slowly. both hers and pips phone beed at the same time making them both pick them up.
unkown: want to see your dog again?
