56 - Foregiveness

I woke up confused, my head throbbing. The next thing I felt was pain shooting down my arm when I tried to sit up. It was then that I noticed the sling. I tried to remember what had happened but my memories were hazy. All I could recall was a fight...then falling from the second floor and blacking out.

I glanced around the room, taking in my surroundings. I was in a different bedroom, but I could tell it was still the same house. I knew Ezra was smart enough not to leave me awake just to move me. I had been disobedient, but if what I'd witnessed was enough to make me fall, then there was a reason I chose not to heed his warnings.

Slowly, I reached up to touch my forehead, feeling a bandage beneath my fingers. It seemed like only a minor injury, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. I tried to sit up again, wincing at the pain in my arm. As I shifted, a sharp ache shot through my ribs, reminding me of the car accident.

The room was dimly lit, and I could hear the faint sound of muffled voices coming from down the hall. It sounded like someone was arguing. My heart raced as I remembered the fight that led to my fall. Was Jovani okay? I remembered the look on Ezra's face when he left my room. His yells scared me.

I tried to move my legs over the side of the bed, wincing at the stiffness in my muscles. As I stood up, my vision started to spin, and I had to grab onto the bedpost to steady myself. The room spun around me, and for a moment, I thought I might pass out again.

When the room stopped spinning, I took a deep breath and slowly walked over to the window. I peeked through the curtains, trying to get a glimpse of the outside world. It was dark out, but I could make out the shapes of trees and a small pond with the moon's reflection dancing on its surface.

"Still hard headed, huh?"

I gasped and spun around, coming face to face with Ezra. His expression was a mix of anger and worry. "You shouldn't be out of bed," he said, his voice stern. "You're supposed to be resting."

I wanted to ask about Jovani, but the look on Ezra's face stopped me. "I'm fine," I lied, trying to force a weak smile. "Just a little sore, that's all."

Ezra didn't look convinced. He hesitated for a moment before asking, "Do you remember what happened before you fell?"

I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. "I heard you and Jovani fighting," I said slowly. "I'm sorry..."

His expression turned grim. "You shouldn't have done that," he said, his voice tight. "It wasn't any of your business." He paused, seemingly debating whether to continue or not. "Look, you need to understand that Jovani and I have a complicated history. He's not the same person he used to be. He's changed, and I need to make sure he stays safe."

I nodded, feeling a knot in my stomach. "I'm sorry if I made things worse," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "I just wanted to help, I didn't mean to..."

He cut me off, his eyes flashing. "You didn't mean to what? Get yourself hurt? Get Jovani hurt? Make things worse? Maybe this will teach you to listen when you're told not to do something." Ezra's voice rose with each word, his anger becoming more apparent.

I felt a stinging sensation in my eyes as he spoke, and I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "I'm sorry," I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll try to be more careful in the future."

There was a long silence as I tried to steady my breathing. I didn't dare to look back at Ezra, afraid that I might see more anger in his eyes. Finally, he sighed, seeming to relax a bit. "Look," he said, his tone softer now. "I know you mean well, but you need to understand that this isn't just about you. There are things going on here that you don't need to know about, and you shouldn't get involved. Just focus on getting better and staying out of trouble."
