Chapter-65: The Fake Armour.

Maya's screams broke out as she struggled in Akshay's arms. She doesn't know what she can do to make things right. Both Maya and Akshay slide down to the ground in each other's arms. Maya wailed in grief as Akshay held her tight in his arms, not knowing how to comfort her. Sweat trickled down her face and neck from her struggle earlier as tears flowed down her chin. Ranav doesn't need to see inside the glass to know that Maya has just broken down. He wants to comfort her so badly but neither does he have the right, nor does he know how to. As Maya's wails turned into whimpers, Ranav musteres up the courage to take a step away from the door, trying to let go of his concern that was needed by none, but as soon as he makes a move, Maya goes completely silent for a second and then, starts the sobs of acceptance. The sobbing was so loud that it broke Ranav's heart to be standing there. The shards of her pain seemed to pierce through his soul but he stayed silent as he took every agonising second of it. He can't console her but he can share her pain in silence. He didn't know why, but her wails contracted his heart as an unsettling feeling grew in him. His heart beats fast as if to remind him of something.

A female doctor rushed into the room and Ranav quickly moved away from the door. Ranav himself is yet to come to terms with the reality that Maya is finding so hard to face. Ketki Aunty is no more. It was not rare for Ranav to grow close to someone in a short time, but it frightens him just as much to lose that person after putting his heart into the relationship. Just like it did with Abhimanyu, it was much easier to love and cherish the man's relationship until he turned out to be his biological father. It became even harder after the accident that almost took away his father, who brought him up, but what made it impossible was the fact that his biological father's affection would come at the cost of his relationship with Ruhi. It comes from the fact that his father has to compromise his love for Ruhi to be able to be Ranav's father in every sense. There was just no middle ground left for Ranav and Ruhi to love and share the affection of Abhimanyu Birla. It's either you or me, Birla boy. One will have to take a step back. Ruhi's words had seemed harsh at the time, but there was no denying that Abhimanyu is someone who cannot give an equal share of love or affection to multiple people. It will always have to be one over the other. Abhimanyu always has a priority and Ranav chose not to be that priority.

Lost in his thoughts, Ranav doesn't realise that the room has gone quiet for some reason. The door remains closed, just like the door to her heart, leaving him no entry. Ranav walks away dwelling on his dreams, which probably have a meaning but are probably now meaningless.

The door opens and Maya looks up with tear-filled eyes trained on the person that just entered the room. Dr. Lisa makes her way towards a misshelved Maya kneeling on the ground, with tears streaming down her face. They both stare at each other for a long minute before Lisa breaks the silence.
"Can I talk to her?" Dr. Lisa asks and Akshay nods. "Alone." She specifies. Akshay reluctantly lets go of Maya and makes his way out of the door.

Maya seats herself on the ground, not caring about all the germs that are probably having a field day on the hospital floor. Every action, every fear and every thought felt useless at the moment. Dr. Lisa takes a seat on the sofa beside the patient's bed, examining Maya's state.
"I know you are grieving. I wouldn't be taking this liberty to interrupt if you were just a patient here, Maya. But you are a doctor. You are someone who's supposed to know just how much your sounds of grief can shake up the willpower of people around here. I do not ask for you to refrain from mourning, but you, as someone who should understand this place better than anyone, should show some strength. At least for those who need your assurance, your family. I just saw your twin brother break down. Don't you think he would want his sister's strength in these moments?" Maya looked at Dr. Lisa as she recovered her composure.

The mention of Adi finally breaks through the fog in Maya's head as she looks at Lisa in realization. Maya could be breaking down inside but Adi could be breaking down somewhere in this hospital and the thought causes unease to grow in Maya.
