We followed Soar through the dense forest and eventually found our trail to the mansion. Immediately, we settled inside; I cured my wound as much as my shard allowed me, and Jake fed Soar while watching the surroundings. At last, we were safe. It was a challenge to get here, but I didn't regret my decision to escape with Jake. I hesitated at first but soon understood I needed him beside me; I remembered what our ancestors said and how I almost lost him on the battlefield. I was ready to give up everything for him. That's why I agreed with this abrupt plan.
Perhaps my concerns for my friends blinded me in our encounter with the demons at the forest. My reckless thoughts fogged my attention and caused me a severe injury. It was my fault; I wasn't in sync with myself.
"You are here," Jake approached me with a bucket and a towel and sat at my side on the bench—. "How do you feel?"
"Better."
"You seem tired; let me help you," Jake offered kindly. I couldn't reject him; thus, I gave him my arm, and immediately, he started to clean it—. "You hurt your hand, too."
"It's fine. The demon's venom won't harm me; I sort it out."
"That's a relief," Jake said while carefully touching my skin with the towel. Shortly, he put bandages on it, and I couldn't help but stare at him. Imperceptibly, I smiled as my heartbeat fastened. I tucked his hair behind his ear, making him grin shyly.
"Jake, you know more bloodshed will come with this war. Right?" I suddenly questioned.
"Of course, but it won't be ours," Jake assured me.
"You almost died today."
"You too."
We looked at each other, upset and bitter. We risked our lives carelessly, and somehow, we saved one another. Yet, luck won't be on our side forever; we must be more cautious or find new answers to our poor defense.
"I have a suggestion," I started.
"Which is?"
"We are reckless in battle, and worrying about each other during a fight will only hurt us," I continued.
"Yes. And?"
"What if we link our lives?" I suggested.
"What do you mean?" Jake frowned.
"If anything happens to you, it'll happen to me, too. Perhaps knowing this, we'll be more cautious," I explained, slightly nervous.
Jake finished sealing the bandages and looked at me, disconcerted—. "Heeseung, you are putting your life in my hands."
