Chapter 17

'Have they crossed the border?' Someone asked in a hushed tone.

'No, not yet alpha but it'll only be a matter of time. They seem to be waiting for something.' A strange voice replied. I twisted under the warm covers, letting out a muffled sound before falling still again, just wanting to fall back to sleep. The voices were silent for a moment before the first man spoke again and I realised it was Breadon.

'They can't get through,' he said softly and I felt a gentle hand brush against my forehead pushing aside some of my wayward hair. 'He can't find her.'

'Of course alpha,' the man agreed.

'What about the missing Elliot boy has he been found yet?' Brendon questioned.

'No, there is no trace of him anywhere. Our trackers believe that he has left pack grounds but the trail was stale when they finally found it.'

'It doesn't make sense, he was only ten. He would have no reason to leave,' Breadon muttered.

'He is the third child to go missing over the last six months,' the man mused.

'I can't allow this to continue,' Breadon said firmly. 'I need to know if there are any weaknesses in our borders. They have to be getting out somehow.'

'Or maybe something is getting in.'

'I need you to double the patrols, with missing children and the threat of the Red Curse pack we need to make sure our defences are firmer than before. I will not allow him to come for her.'

'Yes alpha, I will inform you of any changes.' Footsteps followed his words until I heard the soft click of the door closing.

'You're not going anywhere Leora,' he murmured, stealing my hand again and pressing a firm kiss against my fingers. 'I'm going to keep you safe, I promise.' Lowering my hand back to the bed he started running his thumb over my palm in soothing circles until my body became heavy again, my mind falling blank as sleep overcame me.

The next time I woke was with a jolt. My eyes snapped open and I pulled myself up into a sitting position looking around the room frantically. When My eyes rested on the empty chair beside the bed, my heart dropped. He left.

Feeling my heart rate increase, I quickly threw the covers back, exposing my bare legs to the cold air before I slid down from the bed and started to move across the room quickly.

My face still throbbed from where Breadon had struck me but I put the pain to the back of my mind as I slowly opened the door to Breadon's room.

Ducking my head out I saw he hadn't placed anyone outside the room and I frowned slightly before shaking myself and moving swiftly down the hallway. My feet barely made a noise as I descended the stairs, keeping my ears open for any voices or more specifically his.

I had reached the first floor by the time I heard his familiar voice and rather than calm my heart it seemed to send it into a frenzy. I moved silently through the corridors of the house passing several rooms before I heard another voice, but this time it wasn't familiar.

Leora

It whispered and my head snapped back to look behind me, but there was nothing there. The house was still, nothing but the dancing light of the afternoon sun and the creaks that accompanied any old house. Frowning I turned back to the way I was headed, feeling Breadon's soothing voice pulling me forward.

I had only taken a few steps when I heard it again.

Leora, soul jumper

'Hera?' I muttered, looking over my shoulder again as shivers ran down my spine. Was she in the house? I took several steps back the way I came scanning the rooms I passed, trying to catch a glimpse of the gypsy wolf. Although, I knew it wasn't her because the voice I was hearing was the baritone of a male, but only she had ever called me by that name. It couldn't be her, but then who could it be?
