Chapter 23
I was late. I had been lying in bed all morning waiting for the house to fall silent but it seemed to be pulsating with life. I woke early but remained securely under the covers waiting to escape and venture outside my room. Based on how the pack responded to me last night I wasn't eager to put myself among them today.
I could hear deep male voices from the lower levels joking and messing around all morning with loud thumps sounding through the house. Until suddenly around mid morning the house seemed to still. That's when I crept out of my room, down the stairs and to the room Joey had pointed out last night to be the dinning room.
I had dressed in one of the dresses Breadon had left for me and its navy blue pleats brushed gently against my knees as I peeked through the door.
I was starving, but when I looked inside I saw the room was empty, except for a collection of plates filled with scraps and remnants from breakfast. Hoping to find something to ease my hunger I edged further into the room.
Finding nothing, I instead absently started to move around the room stacking plates and resetting some of the chairs that had been knocked over or left out so someone might trip.
Straightening up all that I could I started to look around the room and I found a door that led to what I only assumed could be the kitchen. It too was empty, although by the looks of the sink I wondered if there were any clean dishes left in the house. The plates were piled so high they spilled over the sink and blocked out half the window. The benches were covered in miscellaneous food stuffs. I was too afraid to look closer, frightened the food might be growing and stage a hostile take over.
I pinched my nose at the smell. It was clear that only boys lived here and their habits were questionable at best.
'What do they do when they run out of dishes?' I grumbled, picking my way over to the sink and starting to move some of the filth. I felt like I needed a hazmat suit just to be in here.
Noticing the dishwasher I moved over to it to find that it was already filled with dirty dishes but no one had bother to turn it on. How were these boys not sick from this filth?
Looking under the sink I found the detergent and filled the dishwasher before setting it to begin it's cycle, the low hum filling the silence.
Sighing heavily, I moved to the sink again and began to fill it with warm water, watching as the bubbles from the detergent started to grow. Then I grabbed a pair of gloves and set to work. I had nothing better to do, Breadon hadn't exactly set out any ground rules.

Almost three hours later the kitchen was finally clean, the floors so shinny you could almost eat off them. I'd filled three trash bags with the amount of food the boys had left lying around, not to mention the expired food in the fridge and cupboards. Feeling relieved that the mess had been cleared I sat down finally to eat my own food when I heard the front door slam open and loud voices filled the house again. I froze, my sandwich raised but stopped just before reaching my mouth.
They were home.
'Hey, who cleaned?' I heard someone shout before a series of confused voices answered him. They were slowly getting closer to the kitchen when suddenly the door burst open, causing me to drop my sandwich and topple off my chair, barely catching myself before I went careening for the recently cleaned white tiles. In the doorway stood several men all looking around in confusion before their eyes started to rest on me. I kept my eyes on them as they continued to file into the room, slowly growing silent as they filled the room. I felt their intense stares like a physical presence on my skin and all I wanted to do was run from the room, a desire to be anywhere but here overwhelming me.
