Chapter 21

'There's a dress in the bathroom for you,' Breadon announced from where he stood in the doorway.

'Why do I need a dress?' I frowned, turning my back on him and pulling the covers over my head. It had been three days since he said I was going to the pack house and I was able to walk on my own, even if everything still ached when I did.

'Your acceptance ceremony,' he answered, monotonously.

'What ceremony?'

'The one you need to complete to be Luna, the one to join my pack.'

'Wouldn't it be our pack?' I shot back, burrowing further into the bed.

'Yes, so you should get up and make yourself look presentable.'

'Fine,' I muttered, throwing the covers back, squashing down the memories of when Colby had come into his room demanding that I look presentable.

I looked over at where Breadon had been standing in the doorway of his room but he was already gone. He was rarely ever here.

Ever since he announced I wouldn't be staying with him anymore he rarely spent any time with me. He didn't even sleep in his own bed, presumably because I was in it and apparently I was repulsive. I'd tried to apologise when I did see him but I didn't know what had made him so angry. He had shut me out and I could only assume it was because of who I am. If this was how he reacted to my 'special powers,' I wondered how he would react to the news that I might be Colby's mate too.

Slowly, I pushed myself up from the bed and crossed to the bathroom. I was reluctant to leave, since Breadon had marked me all I wanted was to be close to him but he kept me at arms length. Every time I tried to get close to him he would push me away and it felt as if with each shove my heart was becoming bleaker and darker. The voice telling me to trust him grew quieter and quieter. The voice in my mind was far louder than the one inside my heart and eventually I knew it would win out.

I quickly showered and dressed in the simple white dress, slipping on the flat white shoes and leaving my short blonde waves to dry however they pleased. Then I sat patiently on the bed awaiting Breadon's return.

'Luna?' Came a familiar voice and I looked up, startled to hear a new voice after so many days of silence.

'Steven?' I frowned, looking behind him to see if Breadon was there as well.

'The Alpha is already at the clearing,' he answered the question I hadn't even asked, bowing his head respectfully.

'Oh,' I sighed, reluctantly slipping off the bed, watching as the long dress swirled around my ankles.

'I am to escort you to the ceremony Luna,' Steven informed me, standing stoically by the door of Breadon's room.

'Of course,' I murmured, taking a deep breath and lifting my head from my toes. This was no time to show weakness. I was to accept the roll of Luna tonight, whether I was wiling or not.

'Come Luna, you do not wish to be late,' Steven prompted and slowly I walked across the room, each step sending pain up my side and throbbing in my head but I didn't let it show.

'Let's go,' I announced emotionlessly when I came to his side. 'Wouldn't want to anger the Alpha.'

Steven nodded in understanding before starting down the corridor with the unspoken agreement that I would follow. I noticed he made sure never to be too close to me and never would he allow our skin to touch even when I lagged behind.

Finally, we arrived at a wide clearing not far from Breadon's house. It was in the opposite direction to town, probably so no humans would stumble upon us.
