Chapter 40

'D-daughter?'

'Didn't you ever wonder what happened to your dear old dad?' he smirked, releasing my wrist and beginning to pace in front of me. 'Didn't you ever believe that you could be more than the daughter that got ignored?'

'You...you ruined my family.'

'That wasn't your family, Leora,' he chuckled. 'I am your family.'

'If you were my family, why did you leave me there?' I demanded. He obviously knew everything I had been through and he had chosen to remain hidden.

'You weren't ready,' he shrugged. 'And besides if I had taken you before, you would have never met your mate or should I say mates.'

'Did you care for my mother at all?'

'No.' He answered simply. I didn't know how to react. I couldn't find a reaction that matched the chill of his tone. 'I've had many experiments over the years. Some payoff, but many just created regular children. I have no use for these children.'

'So what? You seduce women, impregnate them and then just disappear? How many children do you have?'

'Well, I've lived since the beginning of humanity. It's hard to keep count.'

'You're heartless,' I hissed.

'When you've lived as long as I have, you learn to ignore the things that don't matter.'

'Then why bother tricking me into coming here?' I frowned, glancing at where I had last seen Hera. From the look on her face, I was realising she may never have seen this side of her, 'father'.

'I have plans for you, my daughter.' He smirked releasing my wrist and running it along my cheek. Instantly, I drew back and stumbled over the chair behind me.

'You are going to be my greatest achievement. You are the key to finally getting what I deserve. Don't you see Leora, we are going to put those neanderthal wolves in their place.'

'I'm not going to do anything to help you. You're...you're deranged.' I spat, trying to manoeuvre my path away from him. He seemed to be two steps ahead of me and had already grabbed my arm to keep me close.

'You'll see, my dear,' He began, a sinister edge to his tone that set all my nerves on edge. 'I'll show you exactly how I'm going to achieve this. They'll never be able to stop me. Not now that I have you and your gift.'

Then the vile sensation passed through me and my body was no longer my own. His smile grew as he led me from the room. Hera following obediently behind as I shouted at my body to rebel, to do anything but what he wanted me to do.
My voice was locked away, tucked neatly beside my free will as he continued to prattle on about his genius of finding me and luring me here.
I tried to remain focused and calm inside but the panic was growing with each passing moment that I was under his control. I tried to push my own power against the obsidian barrier in my mind but nothing would penetrate it.

I was so focused on the war inside my mind I barely registered that we were heading further down into the strange honeycomb of tunnels within the rocks. The air felt thick with damp and a chill started to take root inside of me. The only sounds were the sounds of our rhythmic footsteps. We walked as one as if we were only one pair of footsteps.

I thought the tunnels would never end when finally we came to a stop beside a small cave opening. If we hadn't stopped and Jerome pointed it out, I would have missed it all together. Now that our footsteps no longer echoed off the walls I could hear a collection of voices that eerily resembled that of children.
