Chapter 20

The growl escaping my muzzle was that of a wild animal, loud and untamed. I felt every hair on the body of my wolf stand on end in anger and anticipation. A single thought ran through the mind of my wolf, the only one I was capable of in this form. Punish the liar.

I knew to protect myself I needed to hurt Breadon. The wolf half of me knew in order to survive we needed to hurt our mate. It was all that made sense. All reason went out the window when I saw the image of him leaving me to the mercy of Colby. He was going to use me as bait, to trap and kill the Red Alpha. After he promised to protect me and keep me safe, I saw that it was his intention to keep me around only to kill the man of every wolf's nightmares. He lied, he broke his flimsy promises and now he needed to suffer. I wouldn't hurt again. The pain would end with him.

'Leora, no,' he shouted, his voice strained as his eyes flashed from black to green and then back again. His wolf was eager to escape to remind me where I stood and according to him that was firmly beneath him. The darkness in his eyes warned me to back to down, challenged me to step out of line. I could almost hear his heart beating a rhythm that demanded I obey the alpha.

'Stop this before you get hurt,' he growled, fisting the bed sheets in his hands as his anger began to spill over. My own claws dug into the mattress as a threatening growl rang out around the room. I wasn't backing down, not this time.

'Leora, I mean it,' he warned, his voice low and lethal. 'Back down.' I let out a snarl in response which only seemed to push his wolf closer to the edge. Quickly, he stumbled from the bed, fisting his hands in his hair as he let out an angry cry.

I felt my four paws pad down against the wooden floors tracing his movements. The black of my paws nearly blended with the wood, but my golden coat made sure he never lost sight of me. I stalked to him, keeping low and focused on his every move. I may not have been a fighter but what I lacked in skill I planned to make up for in pure rage. Nothing was going to hold me back.

'I can't...Stop!' he shouted, his eyes darting to mine, all green gone from them as his limbs started to snap and pop. He had finally lost control.

I let out a triumphant bark as suddenly a dark brown wolf appeared in front of me already snarling, demanding that I submit. He was alpha and I had stepped too far out of line.

His wolf immediately started circling mine, it was obvious to anyone watching on that I was outmatched in almost every way. His wolf was more than double my size, muscles more powerful, his teeth more lethal and his sheer power could easily overcome me in seconds. I didn't have a chance.

Without thought, without fear I leapt for him, teeth bared and claws extended. My target, his neck, not even bothering to try and lure him into a trap I couldn't imagine to set. I wasn't a fighter, no matter how angry I was.

Without hesitating he easily dodged my attack, sending me sprawling across the floor before I slammed into a set of drawers causing them to fall on me. Their full weight was nearly enough to crush me resulting in a startled whimper and yelp escaping my muzzle.

Pushing the pain to the back of my mind, I twisted my body beneath the furniture and began to use my claws to drag my way out. Chunks of wood came off under my claws until there were innumerable scratches marring the once perfect floor. My body struggled, twisting and clawing, the pain building inside of me, until finally, I was free.

My breathing was laboured and I heavily favoured my right side, my left taking most of the force from the chest of drawers, probably breaking several of my ribs.

Breadon was watching me closely, waiting for me to surrender but I wasn't done yet. This wasn't over until all my pain was gone. I could tell from the look in his wolf's eyes that he didn't want to fight me but I had left him with no choice, no other option.
