Chapter 35

Leora

Staring at my reflection, I couldn't help but wish I had a mother to show me how it was done. Mine had never shown me how to do my hair or the art of makeup. I even wished I might have a friend who could show me. Someone I could confide in. Someone I could trust with all my insecurities but instead all I had was my reflection staring back at me.

There was a dinner tonight to welcome all the Alphas to our territory and I wanted to look...nice.

I looked down at the counter to see all the products Breadon must have bought but I wasn't familiar with any of them. My brow furrowed in concentration as I picked up something that looked like a pencil and I wondered if it had landed in here by mistake.

Breadon would be back in just over an hour to pick me up and all I'd successfully done was create a mess.

Groaning in frustration, I started to throw everything back into the bag it had come from. I marched from the bathroom, my hair still a frizzy mess from my shower.

I quickly threw on the first clothes I could find before I charged from the room, heading straight for the front door.

'Leora,' I heard Joey ask in surprise but I had already swept passed him and out the door. 'What are you doing?'

'I need help,' I answered shortly.

'I can help you. You just need to slow down for a minute.'

'You can't help me,' I shot back already walking down the path that would lead me to town.

'Okay,' he answered uncertainly, keeping pace easily beside me. 'Where are we going?'

'To find someone who can help.'

'You're being very vague,' he complained but I didn't slow my pace. 'What do you need help with?'

'Being a girl,' I huffed as we turned down the main street. I was going to the only person who I knew would help me even if he thought I was insane.

'Leora, I don't think-'

'If you want to go back to the house then go.'

'If I go back to the house without you, your mate will relish the opportunity to pull me apart one limb at a time. I'm pretty sure he's just looking for an excuse to do it.'

'He won't hurt you.' I couldn't resist rolling my eyes.

'No, he won't hurt you. Everyone else is fair game.' Joey grumbled as we turned down the street where the mechanic shop was.

'Zach,' I shouted into the mostly empty garage. I really hoped he hadn't left yet. 'Zach!'

'What are you doing?'

'Zach, are you here?'

'Alice?'

'Who is Alice?' Joey scoffed, stepping in front of me as if I was in some sort of danger. A moment later Zach came strolling around a silver hatch with its bonnet missing. He was trying to wipe the black smudges from his hands but it looked like a losing battle from where I was standing.

'Zach,' I smiled awkwardly as I brushed a tense Joey aside.

'You,' Joey nearly growled before he caught himself. 'You took her.'

'Cool your jets,' Zach chuckled, tossing the red rag aside and leaning against a table laden with heavy tools and broken parts of cars. 'I didn't take Alice anywhere she didn't want to be.'

'Leora, we're leaving.' Joey announced taking my hand in his and attempting to pull me away.

'I'm not going anywhere,' I scoffed, pulling my hand from his grip and planting my feet.
