Chapter 22

'Luna?' I heard a familiar voice call as their feet trampled through the forest in search of me.

'Are you sure this is where the Alpha said she would be?' Came a hurried whisper, from a voice I had not yet heard.

'Yes, now keep looking. I have already wronged her so many times before I don't want this to be another mistake,' Steven replied anxiously and I almost took pity on them from where I still lay among the leaf litter on the forest floor.

'Do you think she knows how to control the mind link?' Came the other worried male voice. 'I mean when I first came here I nearly lost my mind from all the voices and she was a rogue.'

'No, I wasn't,' I breathed, but they couldn't hear me over their heavy footfalls. They weren't even getting any closer. If anything they were getting further and further away.

'I'm sure the alpha explained it to her, he wouldn't leave her to suffer alone,' Steven answered assuredly and I felt a scowl spread across my face as I continued to glare up at the darkness of the night sky.

'Right,' the other answered uncertainly before continuing in a rush. 'But the Alpha did look terribly angry after the whole kneeling thing.'

'She is his mate,' Steven replied simply as if this answer would justify any action made by Breadon towards me.

'Would you do that to your mate, Trish?' The other man probed and I felt my ears strain to hear the answer as they started to move further away.

'No,' Steven answered breathing out a heavy sigh. 'But, it is not our place to question the alpha or the manner in which he treats our Luna.'

'Ever the dutiful soldier,' I muttered, getting to my feet slowly and trying to dust myself off as best I could before running a hand through my mattered hair.

'Who's there?' The stranger's voice demanded.

'Leora,' I answered flatly, hearing them start to move in my direction.

'Luna?'

'Apparently,' I grumbled as their silhouettes came into view. It was easy to pick which one was Steven, despite his friend being equally built and intimidating.

'The Alpha sent us to find you,' the other man announced.

'I know,' I shot back as the two came to a stop in front of me, their faces shrouded in darkness.

'Oh,' he said anxiously, obviously wondering how much of their conversation I had heard and more importantly how much I would report back to Breadon.

'I won't tell him what you said,' I sighed, rolling my eyes at his nervousness. I just prayed this man was never put on the front line. No doubt he would run from a kitten.

'We are to escort you to the pack house Luna,' Steven cut over the top, obviously growing tired of his nervous friend.

'Isn't Breadon coming back?' I asked, trying to hide the worry and discomfort from my tone.

'No, he has already retired to his own residence for the night Luna.'

'Oh,' I replied despondently. He hadn't even come to check I was safe.

'We should get moving, it's not far to the pack house,' he tried to assure me, but I didn't care how far it was. I was already too far away from Breadon and it appeared he didn't even care.

'I'm Joey by the way,' the other guy introduced as we started to walk back in the direction of the clearing.

'Where's Simon?' I asked, looking up at the stoic Steven.
