Chapter 8

'Then mark me.' I breathed, and I felt his hands tighten around my waist, drawing me in closer.

'Don't dangle that carrot Leora,' he warned, his warm lips brushing dangerously close to my neck.

'Take me with you.' I bargained.

'You know the condition,' he tested, pulling back so his brown eyes were looking intently into my own.

'I need to know you'll uphold your end of the deal,' I challenged and I saw an odd emotion flash across his eyes before he stepped back from me. 'I need to know you really will stop treating me as if I'm your prisoner.'

'What do you propose?' He asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

'I-I want to go with you to see the werewolves you captured. I-I want to be involved,' I managed to choke out barely able to keep my nerves in check.

'And what about what I want?'

'If you allow me to go, when we return I will...I will willingly do what you want.'

'And how do I know you will honour this agreement?'

'You'll just have to trust me, it's not like I have any power in this arrangement. You hold all the cards.' I replied, feeling my nerve start to slip.

'You hold more than any has before you. You just don't realise it.' He whispered, brushing some of my dirty blonde hair back from my face.

'Not from where I'm standing,' I muttered bitterly, pulling my head back from his reach and casting my eyes to the corner of the room. I couldn't look at him. I couldn't watch what I was becoming in his eyes. I didn't want to see my weakness, his triumph.

'We better get going, I want this done with before it gets dark,' he announced, reaching out and taking a firm hold of my wrist. 'But, remember our deal,' he warned in a low voice leaning over and grazing his lips against the base of my neck again. I felt a shiver run down my spine but I couldn't decipher if it was from fear or an unknown emotion I only felt when I was around him. The bond seemed to be strong at times and absent in others and it was getting harder to find the line I had tentatively drawn. All that remained firm was the wall in my mind, keeping him and everyone else out.

We were deep into the forest when he finally spoke again.

'I don't want it to be this way,' He began in a soft voice.

'How do you want it to be, because I'm offering you what you want? So take it.' I spat, tugging at the grip he had on my wrist again but he refused to relent.

'You're a stubborn one,' he chuckled and I felt my eyes narrow on him.

'And you're a heartless monster,' I retorted lowly and I immediately regretted my words when he had me pressed firmly to the closest tree, his body imprisoning my own.

'Hold your tongue sweet girl,' he spat, his eyes darkening but not quite turning into their unearthly charcoal colour. 'You speak like that in front of my pack and I'll have no choice but to punish you. I will not tolerate rebellion of any kind.' My heart was fluttering in my chest frantically as my body flushed with adrenaline. I needed to run from him, it was the only thought in my mind but he kept me in place, waiting for something.

'Leora,' he growled, pressing me further into the bark of the tree and I couldn't help but wince from the pain shooting through my body.

'I'll behave,' I answered, disgust and anger filling my tone no matter how hard I tried to hide it. However, it seemed to satisfy him because in seconds he released me, taking my hand this time and leading me through the forest again.
