Chapter 7

I hadn't been running for more than ten minutes when I knew I was caught. I could sense another wolf on my tail. I hadn't dared to shift for fear that he might be able to sense it, so I'd been running through the forest on foot with no other thought but to put as much distance between myself and him as possible. I didn't care where I ended up as long as he wasn't there.

Mate or not, I wasn't going to pass up a chance to escape. Although, it looked like I wasn't going to get too far.

'Leora, please wait,' without even realising it I felt my body stop at the despair in his voice. I spun to face the pained face of a breathless Michael and couldn't help but feel the chances of my escape slipping. As if I was already too late before I even began.

'What is it Michael?' I sighed, refusing to take a step towards him knowing it would put me closer to Colby.

'It's Sephira, something's wrong. I-I think you might be the only one that is able to help her.'

'Why?' I frowned, glancing hurriedly over my shoulder.

'Please Leora, she's my mate...my everything,' he finished in a whisper. I hesitated for only a minute before I sighed again and walked towards him. His face quickly fell into a mask of relief, before he spun and started weaving quickly through the forest in the direction of his and Sephira's house.

We were there in no time, Michael took the steps two at a time and dashed through the house until we were both standing beside his and Sephira's bed.

'What happened?' I asked, looking at a trembling Sephira. Her eyes seemed blank as if there was something missing behind her eyes.

'She, hasn't said anything since you left. I can't get her to move or respond...nothing,' he explained helplessly, running his hand over his mates head soothingly but she made no response. What had I done?

'I-I...I don't know what you want me to do Michael,' I whispered, feeling both frustrated and useless. How could I sit by as she suffered, but how could I help her?

'You did it before Leora,' he pleaded, turning to me with desperate eyes.

'I didn't do anything,' I answered defensively.

'Yes, you did. Yo-you touched her and then a warm light filled the room. She, she was better.'

'I couldn't have done that Michael,' I denied, trying to back out of the room, but he was there in an instant, pulling me gently back to her side as my heart tried to gallop from my chest.

'I can't help her Michael. Please, I don't know what happened before but it can't have been me.' I begged.

'Please Leora, just try.'

'What if it doesn't work?' I asked desperately. 'What if I make it worse?'

'She needs help Leora and I think you may be the only one who might have a chance of helping her.'

'I can't do it,' I answered shaking my head vehemently.

'You have to try.' He ordered, tightening his hold on me.

'No I don't.'

'You do if you want to keep your little escape attempt from Alpha Colby.'

'You wouldn't,' I gasped, but from the determination in his eyes I could tell nothing of what he said was a lie. He would turn me over to Colby in a heartbeat.

'I would do anything for Sephira,' he answered flatly. I looked at him for a long time, hoping he would change his mind, hoping he wouldn't ask this of me but from the start I knew there was no way around it.
