(Jhoanna  POV)

"Robles, you have detention duty today," Mr. Martinez's voice rang out as the last bell of the day echoed through the Riverbend Heights High School hallways.

I sighed, pushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. As the school's president, I was often tasked with various responsibilities, but supervising detention wasn't exactly my favorite. Especially when it involved Avery Salvador, the school's most notorious troublemaker.

I made my way to the detention room, my heels clicking against the linoleum floor. When I arrived, Avery was already there, lounging in a chair with her feet propped up on a desk. Her dark hair fell in messy waves around her face, and her usual smirk was firmly in place.

"Hey, Prez," she drawled, not bothering to sit up straight. "Ready to babysit me?"

"Feet off the desk, Salvador," I said, keeping my tone stern. "And let's try to get through this without any incidents."

Avery rolled her eyes but complied, lowering her feet to the floor. She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest. "So, what are we doing today? More boring worksheets?"

"Actually," I said, pulling out a stack of papers from my bag, "we're going to review the student council's plans for the upcoming charity event. Since you're here, you might as well be useful."

Avery raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening. "Are you seriously going to make me do student council work?"

"Yes," I replied, taking a seat across from her. "And who knows? You might learn something."

For a while, we worked in silence. Avery glanced over the plans, occasionally making sarcastic comments that I did my best to ignore. Despite her rebellious exterior, I couldn't help but notice how intelligent she was. Her insights, when not wrapped in sarcasm, were actually quite valuable.

"You know," Avery said after a while, "you don't have to be so uptight all the time. It wouldn't kill you to relax."

I looked up from the papers, meeting her gaze. "And you don't have to act like you don't care about anything," I countered. "It wouldn't kill you to show some responsibility."

Avery's smirk faded, replaced by a more serious expression. "Maybe I care more than you think."

Her words hung in the air, and for a moment, I didn't know how to respond. There was something in her eyes, a vulnerability that I hadn't seen before. It made my heart skip a beat.

"Why do you always get in trouble, Avery?" I asked softly. "You're smart. You could do so much more."

Avery shrugged, her gaze dropping to the desk. "It's easier to pretend I don't care. Less pressure that way."

I reached out, placing a hand over hers. "But you do care. I can see it."

She looked up, her eyes locking onto mine. For a moment, the world seemed to stop. Then, before I knew what was happening, Avery leaned across the desk and kissed me. It was soft at first, tentative, but quickly deepened as I responded.

When we finally pulled away, both of us were breathless. Avery's eyes were wide with surprise, but there was a spark of something more.

"Wow," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"Yeah," I agreed, my heart pounding in my chest. "Wow."

We sat there in stunned silence, the reality of what had just happened sinking in. I had never expected to feel this way about Avery Salvador, the troublemaker I was supposed to be supervising. But here we were, our lives suddenly intertwined in a way I hadn't anticipated.

"So, what now?" Avery asked, her voice filled with uncertainty.

I smiled, squeezing her hand. "Now, we see where this goes," I said, echoing her earlier words. "Together."

Avery's smirk returned, but this time, it was softer, more genuine. "I think I can live with that."

As the detention room faded into the background, I knew that whatever happened next, we would face it together. And for the first time, the idea of detention didn't seem so bad after all.
