It was a quiet afternoon, the kind of day where everything felt still, except for the occasional distant hum of a car passing by or the soft rustling of leaves outside the window. Maloi lay sprawled on her bed, scrolling absentmindedly through TikTok on her phone. Her mind wandered as she liked and commented on a few videos, but none of it really held her attention. The familiar background noise of video game sound effects came from across the room, where her best friend, Rosalie, sat in front of her gaming setup, engrossed in whatever game she was playing on her PS4.
Normally, Rosalie was anything but quiet while gaming. She'd curse, shout, or laugh at the screen, fully immersed in her virtual world. But today, something was different.
Rosalie was silent.
Maloi glanced over at her, noticing the subtle furrow in Rosalie's brow as she focused intensely on the screen, hands gripping her controller tightly. It wasn't like her to be this calm. The quiet was unnerving, and Maloi found herself studying her friend more closely.
Rosalie had her headset on, but the usual playful banter or snarky comments she'd throw into her mic were nowhere to be heard. She leaned back in her chair, her posture more relaxed than usual, though there was still an air of concentration surrounding her. Maloi's curiosity piqued as she continued to watch Rosalie, trying to figure out what was going on in her head.
After a few more moments of silence, Maloi felt Rosalie's eyes on her. Caught in her stare, Maloi smiled instinctively, hoping to break the strange mood that had settled over the room. But Rosalie didn't smile back. Instead, she tilted her head, giving Maloi a look that was unreadable yet intense.
Without a word, Rosalie paused her game, took off her headset, and stood up from her chair. Maloi blinked, watching as Rosalie moved with a deliberate grace toward the bed. Her heart skipped a beat, unsure of what was about to happen.
"Rosalie?" Maloi questioned softly, her voice laced with curiosity.
Rosalie didn't respond. Instead, she slid onto the bed next to Maloi, closing the distance between them in a way that was both surprising and intimate. Maloi's breath caught in her throat as Rosalie leaned into her, draping an arm over her waist and resting her head gently on Maloi's shoulder. It was an unusual move for her friend.
Maloi hesitated for a moment, confused by the sudden closeness, but her body instinctively reacted. She wrapped her arms around Rosalie, pulling her closer in a protective embrace. Rosalie's warmth was comforting, and despite her confusion, Maloi found herself relaxing into the moment.
"What's up with you?" Maloi finally asked, her tone softer now as she stroked Rosalie's back absentmindedly.
Rosalie, still silent, shifted slightly, pressing herself even closer to Maloi. Maloi could feel her friend's breath against her neck, soft and steady, but there was something charged in the air between them. Rosalie's lips brushed the bare skin of Maloi's neck, so light at first that it could've been accidental. But then, there it was again—a deliberate, gentle peck.
Maloi's body tensed, heat rushing to her cheeks. "Rose...?" she whispered, the question hanging in the air.
Rosalie didn't reply with words. Instead, her lips continued to trail soft kisses along Maloi's neck, the sensation sending shivers down her spine. Maloi could feel her heart pounding in her chest, her mind racing to catch up with what was happening.
This wasn't like them.
They'd always been close—best friends for as long as Maloi could remember—but this... this was different. The way Rosalie touched her, the tenderness in her movements, it felt intimate, almost as if they had crossed an invisible line that neither of them had acknowledged before.
"Rosalie..." Maloi's voice was barely above a whisper now, her pulse quickening with every kiss.
Rosalie finally pulled back, her dark eyes locking onto Maloi's. There was something raw in her gaze, something vulnerable yet confident. It was as if Rosalie had made a decision, and there was no turning back.
"I just... needed to be close to you," Rosalie murmured, her voice low and sincere. "Is that okay?"
Maloi's breath hitched at the softness in Rosalie's voice, the quiet plea hidden beneath her words. She swallowed hard, nodding slowly, though her mind was still racing to process everything.
"It's more than okay," Maloi finally managed, her voice thick with emotion. She tightened her grip around Rosalie, holding her closer as if afraid that she might disappear if she let go. "But this... it's different. What are we doing?"
Rosalie's lips curled into the faintest of smiles, though her eyes remained serious. "I don't know," she admitted quietly, her hand brushing a strand of hair away from Maloi's face. "I just know that I've been thinking about this for a while, and I didn't want to pretend anymore."
Maloi's heart raced at Rosalie's confession, the weight of her words sinking in. She had always felt a connection with Rosalie that went beyond friendship, but she had never dared to explore it. Now, with Rosalie so close, her lips inches away, it was impossible to ignore the intensity between them.
Rosalie's fingers gently traced along Maloi's jawline, sending another shiver through her body. "I'm tired of hiding how I feel," Rosalie whispered, her breath warm against Maloi's lips. "I want to be with you."
Time seemed to stop as Maloi processed Rosalie's words. Everything felt surreal, like a dream she didn't want to wake up from. Her eyes fluttered closed, and before she knew it, Rosalie's lips were on hers, soft yet firm, filled with unspoken promises and long-hidden desires.
The kiss was slow and tender, but it was enough to make Maloi's entire body buzz with electricity. She responded eagerly, her hand sliding up to tangle in Rosalie's hair, pulling her closer. The taste of Rosalie's lips was intoxicating, and Maloi found herself getting lost in the sensation, in the feel of Rosalie pressed against her, in the warmth of her body.
When they finally broke apart, both girls were breathing heavily, their foreheads resting against each other. Maloi's mind was a whirlwind of emotions, but in that moment, everything felt right.
Rosalie smiled, a real, genuine smile this time. "I've been waiting for this," she said, her voice barely audible.
Maloi grinned, her heart swelling with affection. "You could've said something sooner," she teased, though her tone was soft, filled with warmth.
Rosalie chuckled softly, brushing her thumb across Maloi's cheek. "Yeah, well, I guess I wanted it to happen naturally."
Maloi leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Rosalie's lips. "Better late than never," she whispered against her lips.
Rosalie hummed in agreement, pulling Maloi back into her arms, where they stayed for the rest of the afternoon, tangled together in a moment that neither of them had expected but both had wanted for so long.
It was the beginning of something new, something they had both been too afraid to admit before. But now, wrapped up in each other's arms, everything felt possible.
And for the first time in a long time, everything felt right.
