A month had passed since that awkward kitchen encounter, and things with Kyle had been steady. Today, I was at Kyle’s house, keeping Nova and Cleo company while waiting for Kyle arrival.
I was told he went for a walk when I got there.
The morning sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the grass as I helped Nova and Cleo with their food. Nova wagged her tail happily, and Cleo purred contentedly as I fed them from their bowls.
"Eat up, you two," I ruffles Nova’s fur as she munched away. Cleo meowed softly, nuzzling my hand.
After their meal, we played in the yard for a bit. I tossed a ball for Nova to chase, and Cleo batted at a dangling feather toy. Their playful energy was infectious, momentarily lifting my spirits.
We eventually settled on the grass, watching cartoons. Nova’s head rested on my lap, and Cleo curled up beside me, purring gently. The simplicity of their company was a welcome distraction from my swirling thoughts.
A few minutes later, Mrs. Johnson, the maid, and also Kyle's guardian stepped outside.
"Miss Luna, can I get you anything?"
I shook my head, smiling politely.
"No, thank you. I’m good."
She nodded and went back inside just as Kyle arrived. He jogged over, his smile brightening his face. We hugged, and he gave me a quick kiss.
"Sorry I’m late," he said, slightly out of breath. "I didn’t think you’d be here already."
"It’s okay," I replied, forcing a cheerful tone.
"I’ve been keeping Nova and Cleo entertained."
Kyle grinned. "Lucky them. Hope they’re treating you well."
I laughed.
"Better than some people, for sure."
He chuckled, shaking his head. I knew he didn't get that, but he just agreed. Even I was confused what that word is for.
"I need to get dressed. We’re going out."
"Oh? Where to?" I asked, curious.
"It’s a surprise" he wink.
"But I promise you’ll like it."
I raised an eyebrow.
"A surprise date, huh? Alright, I’ll be here."
He leaned in for another kiss, this one lingering, before heading inside to change. I watched him go, a mixture of warmth and uncertainty settling in my chest.
Kyle had been incredible these past few weeks, showering me with attention, gifts, and affection. Everything a girl could ask for, really. But despite his efforts, something felt off.
I’d hoped that spending more time with him would reignite the spark I felt when we first met at the library. That day had been a whirlwind of excitement.
But now, months into our relationship, that spark seemed to have faded. I couldn’t ignore the hollow feeling in my chest, a void that no amount of Kyle’s affection seemed to fill.
I cared about him, but there was an undeniable distance between my feelings and the intensity of his.
Kyle returned, looking sharp in casual yet stylish clothes.
"Ready to go?" he asked, his excitement palpable.
"Yeah, let’s do this," I replied, mustering a smile.
