MALAK'S POV.
Eid DAY 4
Oh you've got to be kidding me! The one day Mama decided to let me sleep someone is blowing up my phone? Like C'mon!
"Yes?" I say or rather groan without actually bothering to check the caller ID.
"Assalamu alaikum. Is this Malak?" Okay, the voice sounds familiar and unfamiliar all at the same time. "Yes, Malak speaking" I sit up dragging my legs close to my chin waiting for what the lady on the other line have to say.
"Ruwaida ce, kin tuna ni? Yasir's sister" Now I know where I know her. Talked a couple of times whenever her and Yasir were together.
"Hi?" I say, not sure of what's to come next. "Kaman I woke you up, sorry" she apologises. I wanted to tell her that of course she did but decided against it. "Ba komai" I say as polite as someone woken up so early can.
I look at the clock and it's few minutes past 10:00am. Okay maybe not so early. 70% of the world's population wake up before that time and I just happen to not be one of them. Am I sad about it? Nope, not at all.
"Ya kike?" I ask again. "Lafiya Alhamdulillah. What about you?" She replies. "I'm fine. Thanks for calling" I was ready to end the call before she stopped me.
"Do you know that Yasir na prison?" She ask. Okay, I completely didn't expect that. "Yeah" why is this getting awkward?
"Few days after your wedding, Tafida firm dragged him down for embezzlement" She explains. "Ayya" what more do I have to say after that?
"Dan Allah Malak. You know the situation of our family. It's not so good. Dan Allah do something about it, I know you can. Mijin ki is the head, do something about it. Kinsan your husband was on his matter because of your relationship because Yasir's company didn't even know of the crime. The firm just dragged him, If you give.........."
"Ruwaida" I call firmly and she stopped talking. "Yes, Maybe what initially drew the firm's attention to Yasir was me amma the accusations were not wrong. He's serving his time accordingly. Those crimes he commited them, ba karya aka mishi ba right?" She just have to know that I can't do anything about it.
The first few days of our marriage, I tried to talk Na'eem out of doing anything. Did that work? Apparently, no.
"Fine, he knows you might say that" she sighs. "Who?" I asked Confused. "Yasir" she replies. "Yace he wants to talk to you" she adds. Is she joking?
"I can't. We have nothing to talk about and I don't live in Kano" I reply trying to be as calm as ever. The girl is not at fault but I also don't like this conversation.
"He's not in Kano. He's in Kuje prison" She answers. "Oh. Ruwaida, I have to go. Thank you for calling and as for your brother pray for him to be better" This conversation shouldn't have dragged on for minutes in the first place. "Insha'Allah, bye" I didn't say more before I end the call and drop the phone beside me.
What an incredible way to start the day!
Adda Humairah and Adda Billy should be here any minute. They didn't come on Eid, we all spent the second day at Aunty Ammu's. Yesterday being the third, Adda Humairah spent it with her in-laws and today she'll be here.
My phone starts ringing again and I was so ready to curse out whoever that is until I saw the name on the screen.
"Hey doc!" I say in a sing song. "Hi" she chuckles. "Ya kike?" I ask. "I'm good. Will you be home later?" She ask. "Yeah" I reply. Her voice don't sound too good either. "Everything Okay?" I ask again because it's unlike Fadul to be this moody.
