Vic's pov
"I'm skipping taco night in the dining hall to do this" I told Mei through the screen, taking a bite of my microwaveable frozen pizza.
"That's a big deal. I'm honored" she laughed, biting her own slice of much better, fresher looking pizza.
"Well, a one month anniversary is not an everyday occasion" I shrugged.
Things between Mei and I had been going well. Like, really well. The distance between us didn't even feel like a big deal because we'd constantly be texting, sending each other stuff on every social media platform possible, and calling each other on the daily. It almost felt like we were always connected, even if we were so far apart.
Since we started dating, I noticed my mood had really improved. I felt lighter, more optimistic, and just happier. Little things that used to bother me didn't seem as important anymore. Knowing that I had Mei to talk to whenever I felt like it made a big difference, I really did need someone like her in my life.
"You're right" she nodded. "I'm glad you had this idea. It would have been nice to have a proper dinner date, but this is almost as good enough. And I'm still not that good at like, being romantic and stuff like that, so I'm just...glad you're here"
"And that's okay baby" I said, immediately widening my eyes after a few seconds, as I realized I'd never called her that outside of...more intimate contexts. "Can I call you that?"
"Of course you can" she chuckled.
"Okay, good" I nodded. "I...I was just saying that's okay, you're doing great, actually. I'm not the best at romantic gestures either"
"You're definitely better at it than me"
"Honestly, it's the little things like this that matter. Just being able to spend time with you, even like this, makes me happy" I said, hopefully reassuring her.
"Yeah, same" she smiled. "So, how was your day?"
"It was fine, I guess. I mean, it definitely didn't start well because I didn't hear my alarm clock as you know from my not really calm voice notes I sent you. But it got better, luckily. Knowing I had something to look forwards to this evening definitely helped"
"Something being our kind of dinner date?" she asked with an amused look on her face.
"Yeah" I nodded. "Definitely the highlight of my day. Along with a daffodil growing on the plant I planted months ago"
"Oh wow, if you're putting me on the same level as your flowers you must be really happy about seeing me" she jokingly said.
"You know what? I actually might be happier to see you"
"Oh shit, that's when you know we're getting serious then"
"Yeah" I laughed. "What about you? How was your day?"
"Average, I guess. My lectures were so boring today, so I got myself a fancy ass coffee to cheer myself up after them, but I then felt guilty for how much I spent on it. Now that I think about it, this pizza was a little too expensive too, but it's so fucking good. I was craving it so badly" she said, looking at her food as if it was some work of art.
"Everyone deserves to treat themselves every now and then" I said with a giggle. "What was the boring class?"
"Uhm...you're not gonna like this" she said after a pause of silence. "It was philosophy"
"What??"
"Yeah...I'm sorry, it's boring. There, I said it" she said, defensively holding her hands in the air.
