Vic's pov

"You got really lucky with this apartment, you know" Mei told me as she placed my last suitcase in front of the entrance.

"I know, and I have you to thank for the weird connections with people you had. I wouldn't have found it if it wasn't for you discovering the friend of your friend's sister's roommate was leaving her apartment and she needed to fill the gap"

"It's a small world, you know" she shrugged.

"It's perfect. I mean, it's like really small, but this is the best I can get for the rent prices here" I said, dragging a bag from outside of the door to inside. Maybe I'd packed a bit too much stuff.

"Yeah, and you've got a nice view of the city from high up" she said, pointing towards the window on the other side of the door. "At least you're not living under the ground like me"

"True" I laughed. "Your place is really nice, though"

"Yeah, I'm not complaining. Plus, it's not far from here, which is a big bonus" she smiled, planting a quick kiss on my lips.

"Exactly" I nodded. "I feel kind of guilty for having you carry all my stuff up here, by the way"

"Don't" she was quick to say. "I have muscles for a reason"

"Carrying my luggage?"

"Well...that too" she said, suddenly lifting me up in my arms. "They help me do this too"

"Mei!" I laughed, wrapping my arms around her neck.

"What? You don't like this?" she chuckled, spinning me around.

"I do, actually" I smiled, reaching up to kiss her. "I love you so much"

"I love you too" she also smiled, gently putting me down. "Thank god you have a private bedroom here, or your roommate would have hated you for pulling out all of you plants in the room"

"Okay, I only brought like three of them" I shook my head.

"You sure?"

"Maybe five, alright" I sighed, playfully hitting her arm. "But I wouldn't have invaded her personal space with them"

"Imagine her coming back to her apartment and finding a jungle in her bedroom"

"A jungle?" I burst out laughing. "Don't compare five innocent small plants to a whole ass jungle"

"Do you think plants can like, feel stuff? I've always wondered. What if they were weirded out by us having sex in front of them in your dorm?"

"Oh my god" I rolled my eyes at her.

"What? It's a legitimate question. Maybe they were silently judging us"

"Great" I said. "Now I'm going to think about that every time I water them"

"Poor plants" she laughed.

"Whatever" I said, shaking my head. "Let's get these boxes unpacked now"

"Can't we take a pause? Maybe we could order some takeout. I'm hungry" she suggested.

"You're always hungry. And you're lazy" I said. "But I guess that isn't too bad of an idea"

"Thank you" she grinned, looking more excited than I'd seen her all day.

We ended up eating Chinese food on the floor, next to suitcases and a bunch of boxes, and it felt weirdly normal. I felt at peace, for some reason. I thought I was going to get really agitated about moving in, but doing it with Mei helped a lot, I guessed.

She was right about being lucky to have a view of the city from up high, it was certainly not a sight I was used to having. And there was also a small balcony on one side of the apartment. It was really, like really small. But it was still cool.

"Really, it's so cool that you have a balcony" Mei said as she walked towards it.

"It's so small, it can barely fit one person" I said. "But yeah, I'll be using it"

"It's definitely better than nothing" she said, sitting on the small chair that was outside.

"True" I agreed, sitting on her lap sideways.

"Can you visualize your future here now that you've moved or does it still feel weird to you?" she asked, wrapping her arms around me.

"Kind of" I said, leaning my head against hers. "It's not gonna be easy for me to get used to living here, you'll probably have to talk me through multiple mental breakdowns"

"And that's okay" she kissed the top of my head. "I'm here for whatever you need"

"Thank you" I smiled. "But yeah, I feel like I'm kind of healing my inner child by moving here. I always used to dream about doing this"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah" I nodded. "I used to daydream about moving to New York city and living in a nice apartment with my significant other and spending my days in cozy cafes and bookshops and having my own little garden on a terrace. Which is not exactly what's happening, but close enough"

"You'll get there" she chuckled. "And am I a good projection of how you imagined said significant other in your mind?" she teased.

"I guess so..." I jokingly said.

"What do you mean you guess so?" she played along.

"I'm kidding, of course you do" I laughed. "I've always mainly dreamed about someone who would make me feel like I could totally be myself around them, which checks out, and also someone with a good sense of humor, which you have. And then someone who had good looking abs. Which is also you"

"That was seriously your criteria?" she immediately laughed.

"Well, yeah" I proudly said. "What's wrong with it?" I furrowed my brows.

"Nothing, nothing" she chuckled. "I'm glad I fit it all"

"Of course" I said with a giggle. "No but actually, I've also always wanted to be with someone with whom I could feel somewhat free. I mean, I've seen lots of couples where the two people get so involved in each other that they become like, codependent and stuff. And being together becomes some kind of constraint, I've always been scared of that"

"I get that. I don't wanna feel suffocated in a relationship. Which was something I kind of struggled a lot with until I met you"

"Exactly" I nodded. "It's important to have our own lives and interests"

"Yeah" Mei said. "I'm glad you feel like that about me"

"Of course" I said. "That's why I've always been sort of against marriage. I mean, people can do whatever they want to do obviously, I've just never felt like that was something I wanted for me"

"Oh, absolutely" she agreed. "I guess we've already talked about this, but yeah, marriage is not for me. I've never ever seen myself doing that. As you said, people can do whatever they think is best for them, though"

"I'm glad we're on the same page about that" I said, feeling relief even though I already knew what Mei's views on that subject were. "We can spend all the money people would spend on a wedding on more fun stuff like vacations"

"Don't forget the money people need once they have kids" she added.

"You're right, oh my god. A future of luxury trips awaits us" I confidently said.

"I'm excited already. I can't wait for you to be a rich professor at New York University while I become a published author"

"One can only dream" I chuckled. "We're gonna be the coolest couple ever"

"Indeed" she nodded, gently kissing my temple. "It's nice to dream sometimes"

"Especially with you" I said, feeling a sense of complete peacefulness.
