Mei's pov

"Vic was so nervous on the phone this morning that she made me nervous too" I told Ellie as we sat down in our seats.

We went to Boston for Vic's graduation ceremony, and we just got to the place where it was being held. We'd been able to say hi to her, but she seemed pretty busy and had to rush back to the other students.

I didn't really wanna show it, but I was suddenly feeling pretty emotional. I was really proud of my girlfriend.

"She's probably just overwhelmed" Ellie said, giving me a reassuring smile. "She's worked so hard for this."

"I know" I nodded. "I'm so proud of her. I just want everything to be perfect for her today"

"I'm really proud of her too. I'm getting a little emotional" my friend said with a chuckle. "But I'm sure everything will be great"

"Hopefully" I nodded with a smile. "We need to make sure to cheer as loudly as possible when she gets on the stage. I want her to feel embarrassed"

"Oh, we will" El laughed, but soon after her expression turned shocked, or kind of disgusted.

"What happened?"

"Whatever you do don't turn around" she said, and I obviously should have listened. But my instinct's first reaction to that was to turn around.

I definitely shouldn't have, though. Sarah, my ex, and Maya were standing just a few feet away from us.

"What the fuck are they doing here?" I asked Ellie, praying that they didn't see me.

"I have no idea, but, oh shit, oh my god, I just made eye contact with May- Oh god, they're coming here, I'm sorry" she very panickedly said, and I only had a few seconds to mentally prepare myself before we found ourselves face to face with them.

"Hi there" Maya said, as if she hadn't just entered the most awkward situation ever.

I knew her and Ellie were not on bad terms anymore after they cleared their issues about Sam, but they still weren't best friends or anything. And the last time I'd seen Sarah was when we ended up sleeping together months after our breakup.

"Hey" Ellie said with a very forced smile. "You two know someone who's graduating here too?"

"Yeah, Maya's cousin is graduating" Sarah replied.

"That's... nice" I said, trying to keep my voice neutral.

"What about you two?" Maya asked.

For some very stupid reason, my brain once again didn't pause to think about what I was going to say, so I ended up saying "I'm here for my girlfriend" in the same exact moment when El said "We're here for Vic".

There was an awkward silence which hung in the air for a few seconds, which actually felt like hours. Maya raised an eyebrow, while Sarah looked a mix of confused and amused.

"You're dating El's best friend?" Maya asked.

"I...yeah" I cleared my throat.

"Wow, I did not see that coming" Sarah chuckled. "How long have you two been together?"

"Uh, like eight months" I mumbled, glancing at El who gave me a reassuring nod.

"Okay, was just checking I wasn't involved in any cheating when we slept together" she said, causing me to almost choke on my saliva.

"Well, congrats Mei" Maya quickly intervened, very much looking like she was trying not to laugh.

"We'd better head back to our seats now" Ellie said.
