•MEHER •The forest was dark and scary. Trees whispered secrets in the wind, their branches like spooky hands reaching out. We walked and walked, our hearts pounding like crazy drums. But no matter which way we turned, our feet always ended up in the same creepy spot.
Four times!
Right there, in the middle of nowhere, stood a big, scary oak tree. A red cross was painted on its rough skin, looking like a bloody wound. And below it, something was written. Something that made the hair on the back of our necks stand up.
The words were like icy fingers crawling down our spines. They weren’t a growl, but a dead silence that pressed in on us from all sides. The trees seemed to close in, their branches like bony arms reaching out to grab.
Our hearts pounded like trapped birds. There was no way out. The path we’d taken four times was gone, swallowed by the green darkness.
The words on the tree, scratched deep and dark, were a sentence this time: "where will you escape now? "
A cold dread seeped into our bones. I let myself believe that it was written by some crazy traveler.
“ What Now meher, it's been three fucking four hour since we are walking and there is no escape ” I heard Rivaan snapping.
“ I don't know, ” I whisper, still not taking my eyes from the tree.
“ What do you mean by you don't know? ” He yelled and I closed my eyes in frustration.
“ You were the one who chose this road. We can't even find which road we took, and it's almost night time ” He let out I could feel his frustration. It started to get dark.
" What now? " I questioned myself.
The forest grew darker around us as night approached. I could barely make out Rivaan's silhouette in the fading light, but his anger was palpable.
"We need to find shelter," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"It's not safe to keep wandering in the dark."
Rivaan scoffed "Oh, now you're concerned about safety? After leading us, who knows where?"
I bit back a retort, knowing it would only escalate things. Instead, I squinted at our surroundings, searching for anything that might offer protection for the night.
A gust of wind rustled through the leaves, sending a chill down my spine.
"How are we getting out of here?" Rivaan asked, his voice tinged with desperation.
I hesitated before responding, "Maybe tomorrow we can find a way by following the sun?"
Rivaan looked at me and sighed, clearly unconvinced. He sat down at the edge of a fallen log and pulled out his phone, desperately searching for a signal.
