The small book peeked out as I dug through the cluttered shelf to grab an important file. As I pulled it free. Carefully, I re-stacked the books back on the shelf, taking a moment to glance at my wife's collection of romance novels. Most had typical cheesy covers with couples kissing. But one book stood out - the cover showed a young girl with windswept hair, soaring through a cotton candy pink and brilliant blue sky.
The curved typography of the title seemed to match her joyful expression. Unlike the cliche romance titles surrounding it, this one intrigued me. Forgetting about the file I'd been searching for, plucked the unique book off the shelf and held it, gazing at the simple but evocative cover art. Finally, I cracked it open. The beautiful title page printing made me smile. But then my eyes landed on the inscription at the top, and my smile immediately faded.
"To my dream girl- From Jay Agarwal to Yuvika Negi. With love."
I re-read those words over and over, trying to make sense of them sinking into my mind. That last part - "With love" - felt like a punch to the gut.
I held the book, fingers gripping the cover too tightly. My mind raced, conjuring images I didn't want to See.
‘ Did she still have feelings for him? ’
‘Was she forced into this marriage? ’
"Done going through my bookshelf?" she questioned, looking towards me.
"Yeah ," I fibbed, not wanting to reveal my discovery just yet.
"But I actually found something interesting I could read instead." I turned to face her, holding up the back cover obscuring the inscription.
Her eyes went wide with excitement. "No way, you're finally going to read one of my romances book?" She beamed.
"That's amazing! We'll get to discuss the book together."
But when I slowly rotated the book to reveal the cover and inscription, her smile vanished as quickly as mine had moments before.
"Oh..." She exhaled slowly. "You might not like that particular one."
I moved to sit next to her on the bed. "Why not? What's wrong with this book?"
Yuvika hesitated, chewing on her lip. "Well it has a really sad ending. Their love didn't get the happy conclusion it deserved."
Furrowing my brow, I opened the book again to re-read that inscription.
"So what? Not every love story has to have some beautiful fairytale finale” she simply nodded slowly in acknowledgment of my words.
“ Seems like this book was gifted by someone special ” I let out and stressed the word special and I thought she would deny it. Or she would say it was from a friend but she didn't and something in me tightened. She just hummed in reply seeing the name on the top of the page her lips tucked in a soft smile.
