Another long year had passed for Erebus as he remained with Summer and her family. Winter had arrived, blanketing the ground with a thick layer of snow and frost. Erebus, however, was preoccupied, his mind elsewhere, indifferent to the cold. While everyone else sought the warmth inside the house, Erebus chose to stay out in the biting cold, immersed in his work. Summer was not happy with Erebus's constant outdoor vigil; she wanted him to rest and find peace.
Yet her words fell on deaf ears, she looked outside and watched her grimm friend staring towards the horizon with his golden eyes burning ever so slightly
Erebus was not merely standing guard and watching for threats; he actively contributed to the cause. His focus remained on reducing the Grimm population as effectively as possible. With every injury, his body adapted, becoming stronger, and with every particle of Grimm dust absorbed, he became swifter and more lethal. He might have laughed at the sheer power he had amassed, for it was still far from his ultimate desire. Had he continued to serve Salem, he likely would have ceased to grow stronger and perished as a weak and empty husk of his former self.
With snow and frost blanketing the ground and clinging to the home, Erebus had taken to chopping wood for the fireplace. He was in the midst of felling trees with his sword, effortlessly tossing a log over his shoulder to carry back to Summer's house. With his blade in hand, he positioned the tree carefully before cleaving it cleanly in half with a forceful strike. He then chopped the logs into smaller pieces, stacking them neatly outside the house.
Erebus let out a slight grunt as he felled another tree, his self-directed anger reaching a crescendo that threatened to drive him to madness. He yearned for an end to this life, to allow another to succeed him. Despite his desire to believe in his chosen purpose, he felt the brother of light should have selected a different warrior for the mantle he bore. Yet, the elder Grimm recognized he could not forsake his vow to the celestial being. With Artemis and Wolf still among the living, and Salem intent on annihilation, rest was a luxury none could afford until their demise.
Beside yet another tree, Erebus gripped his sword at his hip, then swung it back and thrust it into the tree. To his frustration, the blade did not slice through. Pulling his sword back once more, he tried to fell the tree but was met with failure again.
Growing increasingly angry with himself, Erebus drew his sword back and released a loud roar that reverberated through the trees, then he slammed the blade into the trunk with enough force to fell the tree.
Erebus quickly heard the front door of the house open, revealing an agitated Summer, her hair standing on end as her eyes were almost shut tight.
Summer: Erebus can you do this at another time? your kinda waking everyone up with the whole cutting trees thing, do you really need to do this right now?
Erebus responded with a mere grunt as he approached another tree, his sword ablaze with flames. He persisted in the monotonous task, felling yet another tree. Hoisting the tree trunk onto his shoulder, he carried it to the house and began chopping it into smaller pieces. This behaviour increasingly concerned Summer about her grim companion. She was astute and had observed his growing distance; he had even begun to shun all forms of interaction, isolating himself almost constantly. Summer could only speculate about the turmoil inside his mind...
Summer; Erebus are you okay? you've been a little cranky lately and won't talk to anyone lately...is everything okay?...
Erebus didn't even turn to Summer, it was true, he was not okay but decided to hide it, though his eyes betrayed him as Summer could see the sorrow ands rage within.
Erebus: I'm fine, leave me for now, there is work to do...
Summer was not going to tolerate any of Erebus' nonsense. In her eyes, one of her dearest friends was in pain and needed assistance. She couldn't simply walk away and ignore it; she had to do whatever it took to reach out to Erebus.
