By the time all the tests are over, I'm utterly exhausted. We gather in front of Aizawa, anxious to hear the results.
"All right, time to give you your results," he announces, his voice calm but commanding. "I've ranked you all from best to worst. You should probably have a good idea of your standing already. I'll just pull up the whole list. It’s not worth going over each individual score."
I glance up at the board, and my heart skips a beat. Fourth place?! A small, unintentional whoop escapes my lips before I quickly slap my hand over my mouth. Heat rushes to my cheeks as everyone turns to look at me. I lower my gaze, embarrassed but unable to stop the smile tugging at the corners of my lips.
But then my eyes shift down to the bottom of the list, where Midoriya's name sits. My heart sinks. He’s dead last. Worry gnaws at me—what does this mean for him?
"And I was lying; no one's going home," Aizawa adds nonchalantly, snapping me out of my thoughts.
What? Did I hear that right?
"That was just a rational deception to make sure you gave it your all in the tests."
Rational. Why does this handsome man keep using that word? Rational... like I should be... about him. I internally scold myself. Focus, Mailin. He’s your teacher!
Aizawa continues, "That's it. We’re done for the day. Pick up a syllabus in the classroom. Read it over before tomorrow morning." He turns to leave but then hesitates, glancing back. His gaze lands squarely on me.
"Hoshino, you stay. I need to talk with you about something."
I freeze as my classmates start to disperse, a mix of curiosity and anxiety flooding my chest. Why does he want to talk to me? Did I do something wrong? My heart beats faster as I notice the puzzled looks from some of the others. Reluctantly, I step forward, trying to keep my composure.
Aizawa-sensei leads me to a quieter corner. His expression is unreadable, as always, but there’s something in his eyes that keeps me on edge.
“Hoshino,” he begins, his tone serious but not harsh, “you performed exceptionally well today. Your use of telekinesis was impressive, but I need to discuss something important.”
I nod, holding my breath. “Yes, Aizawa-sensei?”
He studies me for a moment before continuing. “Your quirk has a lot of potential, but it also seems like you’re relying on it in a way that may not always be ideal. Telekinesis is versatile, but it can be overwhelming if not controlled properly. It’s crucial to understand your limits and how to apply your quirk effectively in different situations.”
His words hit me hard, but I realize he’s not criticizing me—he’s guiding me. I swallow, nodding. “I understand. I’ll work on it.”
“Good,” Aizawa-sensei replies, his gaze softening just a bit. “Given your performance today, I want to keep an eye on your progress. You’ve got potential, but I want to make sure you’re developing in a balanced way. There will be more assessments and training, and I’ll be watching how you adapt and grow.”
Relief and determination wash over me in equal measure. “Thank you, Aizawa-sensei. I appreciate the feedback.”
As I turn to leave, he calls after me. “Remember, being at the top isn’t just about performance. It’s about how you handle challenges and learn from them. Keep that in mind.”
His words linger in my mind as I walk back to join the others. Despite the exhaustion from the day, I feel a renewed sense of purpose. Aizawa-sensei sees something in me, and I’m determined to prove him right.
