Mailin’s POV
As winter break comes to an end, the atmosphere in Class 1-A feels different. Everyone is energized, excited to talk about their work-studies, but there’s also something more lingering in the air. I can feel it—whispers, glances. It’s subtle, but it’s there.
I try to stay focused, pushing aside the growing tension. Aizawa and I have been careful. Really careful. But even with all our precautions, there’s always the risk. And lately, with the way Mina and Toru have been acting around me, I can’t shake the feeling that they’re starting to notice something.
“Mailin!” Momo calls out, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Are you ready for the practical report? I’m curious to see what you’ve learned with Mirko.”
I force a smile, pushing away the nervous flutter in my chest. “Yeah, I’ve been practicing hard.”
It’s true—my work-study has been intense, and Mirko doesn’t let me slack for even a second. But no matter how hard I try to focus on training, my mind keeps drifting back to him.
To us.
The bell rings, signaling the end of lunch, and we all head to the changing rooms to suit up. As I walk down the hall, I can’t help but feel like someone’s watching me. I glance over my shoulder, catching Mina’s curious gaze, but she quickly looks away, whispering something to Hagakure.
---
In the girls’ changing room...
“Mailin, you’ve been acting kinda weird lately,” Mina teases, her eyes narrowing playfully. “You’re not hiding something from us, are you?”
I freeze for a split second, my heart racing. Keep it cool. “Weird? What do you mean?”
“Oh, nothing,” Mina shrugs, but there’s a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Just noticed you’ve been a little... distracted.”
I laugh, trying to play it off. “Maybe it’s the pressure of the work-study.”
“Hmm, maybe,” Hagakure adds, leaning in with an invisible grin. “Or maybe there’s something else on your mind?”
Ochaco blushes as she drops something from her wrist guards—an All Might keychain. Mina swoops in immediately, giggling as Ochaco stammers excuses. It’s the perfect distraction, and I take the chance to finish changing quickly, my mind racing.
They can’t know. Right? We’ve been so careful.

Meanwhile, in the boys' changing room...
I can hear Kirishima hyping everyone up about their work-study progress. Midoriya talks about the progress with Blackwhip, and of course, Bakugo’s typical reaction ends with Midoriya bleeding, much to everyone’s shock. It’s all the usual chaos, but the tension brewing under the surface of Class 1-A feels different.
Outside, as the boys gather around All Might trying (and failing) to tell a joke, someone asks where Aizawa is. The question makes my stomach drop, though I try to keep my expression neutral. All Might mentions an emergency, but my mind is already wandering to him.
He had mentioned something about being called in for a serious situation, but he didn’t tell me what. And now, I can’t help but wonder... what’s going on?

Aizawa’s POV
The drive to Tartarus feels longer than usual. Hizashi is unusually quiet beside me, his usual energetic demeanor replaced by a heaviness neither of us wants to acknowledge.
I try to focus on the road ahead, but my thoughts keep pulling back to her. Mailin.
I promised her we’d be careful. And I intend to keep that promise. But right now, the weight of this mission with Kurogiri and the possibility that my old friend’s body has been twisted into something unrecognizable is overwhelming.
As we pull into Tartarus, I can’t shake the image of Oboro from my mind. The three of us, Hizashi, Oboro, and I, had plans. We were going to create an agency together. We were going to change the world. But Oboro didn’t make it, and now... this.
I clench my fists as we meet Naomasa and Gran Torino. The details of Kurogiri’s creation, the twisted nature of the Nomu... it’s all too much. But we need answers.

Mailin’s POV
By the time class is over, there’s still no sign of Aizawa. I try not to think about it, but the whispers around me are getting louder. There’s something happening behind the scenes, and it’s not just about my secret with him.
Mina and Hagakure keep throwing glances my way, and I can’t help but feel like they’re piecing things together. Or maybe I’m just being paranoid.
During training, I push myself harder than usual, trying to drown out the nagging thoughts. But even as I focus on Mirko’s drills, I can’t escape the weight pressing on me. What if someone finds out? What if we’re not as careful as we thought?
Later, as we gather back in the dorms, Momo approaches me with a curious expression. “Mailin, you’ve been really quiet today. Are you sure everything’s okay?”
I force another smile, but I can feel my facade cracking. “Yeah, just tired from training.”
She doesn’t seem convinced, but thankfully, Mina calls her over to talk about something, sparing me from more questions. I retreat to my room, shutting the door behind me and sinking onto my bed.
A few minutes later, my phone buzzes.
Aizawa: “I’m still at Tartarus. Something serious came up.”
My heart sinks, and I immediately start typing a response.
Mailin: “Is everything okay?”
His reply comes slower this time.
Aizawa: “I’ll explain when I can. Stay focused on your training.”
I let out a slow breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. I trust him, and I know he’s handling something important. But that doesn’t stop the gnawing fear at the back of my mind.
Things are shifting. Both with our secret and with whatever’s happening outside of U.A.
And I can’t shake the feeling that this is only the beginning.
