The day was buzzing with energy as Midnight took to the stage, her voice booming across the stadium, announcing the start of the U.A. Sports Festival's first event: the Obstacle Race. The roar of the crowd was deafening, and the excitement in the air was palpable. We were all lined up, shoulder to shoulder, waiting for the signal to begin.
"The first event," Midnight declared with a flourish, "is the Perilous Obstacle Race! You'll be running around the stadium, through various hazards! The course is approximately four kilometers long, so brace yourselves!"
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. This was it-our first real test, with the entire world watching. The tension was thick, and I caught sight of my classmates, each preparing in their own way. Bakugou's eyes were sharp with determination, Todoroki stood calm and focused, and Midoriya... well, Midoriya looked as nervous as ever, but there was a fire in his eyes that I hadn't seen before.
My mind raced with strategies. I could fly with my telekinesis, of course, but I knew that would drain my energy if I wasn't careful. I had to pace myself. This wasn't just about power; it was about endurance and tactics.
The horn blared, signaling the start, and instantly the crowd of students surged forward. Todoroki made his move almost immediately, freezing the ground beneath us in an icy wave. Dozens of students were caught in the ice, stuck as their feet slid out from under them.
I hovered just above the ground, using my telekinesis to avoid the ice entirely. As I lifted myself higher, I noticed that all of Class 1-A had managed to dodge Todoroki's ice as well, each of us using our quirks to avoid being trapped. Todoroki glanced back, his expression impassive. He had expected this.
The first obstacle came into view: giant villain robots, the same kind we faced during the entrance exam. I grit my teeth, steeling myself as the massive machines blocked the path ahead. Todoroki, ever the strategist, froze them all in one fell swoop, shattering their joints and leaving a trail of broken machinery in his wake. The robots came crashing down, blocking the way for the students behind him.
I could see the debris falling fast, threatening to crush the students behind Todoroki. My heart raced, and without thinking, I extended my telekinesis, catching the falling chunks of metal and redirecting them away from the other competitors. The effort was draining, but it felt right. I couldn't let anyone get hurt.
Midoriya was nearby, dodging through the chaos, using a piece of broken robot as a makeshift shield. His eyes were sharp, focused, and I could tell he was thinking several steps ahead. He was no longer the scared, quirkless boy from the entrance exam-he was strategizing, adapting, and surviving.
I pushed myself forward, levitating higher to gain a better view of the course. Todoroki was already far ahead, his lead growing as he effortlessly maneuvered through the obstacles. I knew I couldn't fly the entire course-it would drain me before I even reached the second stage. Instead, I focused on conserving my energy, flying just high enough to avoid danger but not so much that I exhausted myself.
The second obstacle appeared: The Fall-a canyon that stretched out before us, requiring us to cross on narrow ropes. I hovered for a moment, considering my options. I could fly straight across, but I needed to be careful not to burn through my energy reserves.
Many of the other students hesitated, but I watched as Bakugou blasted himself forward with his explosions, quickly catching up to Todoroki. The two of them were neck and neck now, each determined to take the lead. Meanwhile, Midoriya was carefully crossing the ropes, his shield held tightly in one hand as he balanced his way across.
Taking a deep breath, I floated just above the ropes, maintaining a low altitude to conserve energy while avoiding the unstable footing. I could feel my muscles burning from the effort, but I kept my focus sharp. This was no time to falter.
The final obstacle loomed ahead: The Land Mine Field. My stomach dropped as I saw Todoroki and Bakugou carefully navigating through the dangerous terrain. The mines were scattered across the ground, hidden just beneath the surface, waiting to detonate at the slightest touch.
I hovered above the field, but the challenge now was figuring out how to make it through without using up the last of my strength. Todoroki was taking his time, cautious as he moved through the mines, while Bakugou, being immune to explosions, blasted himself ahead with ease. They were still fighting for the lead, and it was clear that this was the make-or-break moment for all of us.
Midoriya, who had been trailing just behind, suddenly stopped. I watched as his eyes lit up with an idea. He placed his metal shield on the ground and jumped onto it, using one of the landmines to launch himself into the air, propelling himself forward with a massive explosion. Dust and debris filled the air as he shot ahead, overtaking both Todoroki and Bakugou in a single daring move.
The crowd roared as Midoriya soared through the air, and I couldn't help but smile. He was always full of surprises.
With renewed determination, I pushed forward, using my telekinesis to lift myself just above the mines. It was risky, but I knew I had to stay close to the ground to avoid burning out. I could feel the tension in the air as Todoroki and Bakugou realized what Midoriya had done-they both sprinted after him, desperate to regain the lead.
As we neared the finish line, the tension was palpable. Midoriya, Todoroki, and Bakugou were all neck and neck, each pushing themselves to the limit. I hovered just behind them, trying to conserve the last of my energy for a final push.
Midoriya used his metal shield again, slamming it into the ground to set off more mines, creating a massive cloud of dust that momentarily blinded Todoroki and Bakugou. With a final burst of speed, he crossed the finish line, taking first place.
The crowd erupted into cheers as Midoriya stumbled across the line, his face filled with disbelief and exhaustion. Todoroki crossed just after him, followed by Bakugou, both of them frustrated but clearly impressed by Midoriya's strategy.
I crossed the finish line moments later, my body trembling with exhaustion but my heart swelling with pride. I hadn't placed first, but I had made it through-surviving the perilous course and proving to myself that I could hold my own among the best.
As I caught my breath, the roar of the crowd filling the stadium, I glanced up toward the stands. Was Aizawa-Sensei watching? Had he seen what I'd done? The thought sent a flutter through my chest, and I found myself smiling despite the fatigue.
This was only the beginning.
