Mailin’s POV

The cold wind nips at my face as we gather at Ground Gamma for our winter training session. My breath forms small clouds as I adjust my new hero costume, feeling both the weight and excitement of the modifications. This outfit has been tailored for winter, with thicker materials that are more insulated against the cold—perfect for these freezing days. But no amount of costume upgrades can quell the nerves bubbling in my chest.

Around me, my classmates chat excitedly about their changes. Tenya gestures wildly, pointing out the improvements and how much the costumes have changed over the summer. Rikido throws a playful jab, noting that Tenya himself hasn’t changed a thing.

As I glance at Katsuki, I catch Izuku talking about the new modifications on his costume. The moment the words leave Izuku’s mouth, Katsuki’s eyes narrow, and I can feel his irritation from here. He’s always on edge, but Izuku’s comments seem to ignite him even faster these days.

"Shut up, nerd!" Katsuki barks, though we all know it's more out of habit than anything serious.

The conversation shifts as Mashirao comments on Izuku’s own upgrades, drawing attention to his new gloves. That sends Ochaco into a flustered outburst, her face turning as red as her hero suit. She stammers, clearly remembering Izuku’s interaction with Mei while they worked together on their costumes. I can't help but smile as Mashirao raises an eyebrow in confusion at Ochaco’s reaction.

The moment feels light, fun, but then a voice cuts through the chatter.

“Class 1-B has arrived.”

We all turn to see Neito Monoma, smug as ever, striding toward us with the rest of his class in tow. Class 1-B is decked out in their hero outfits, looking just as prepared and competitive as we are.

Neito immediately takes the stage. “Looks like Class 1-B is already in the lead, given the results of the School Festival,” he says, his voice oozing arrogance. “We won by two ballots. Clearly, we’re superior.”

Before he can go any further, he’s swiftly cut off by Aizawa-Sensei’s Capturing Weapon, wrapping around his body like a snake.

"That’s enough," Aizawa-sensei grumbles.

“Why does he always act like this?” I mutter under my breath, earning a smirk from Momo standing next to me.

Our homeroom teachers, Aizawa-Sensei and Vlad King, stand in front of us, their presence demanding our attention. Vlad’s booming voice fills the air as he announces the arrival of a special guest, cautioning both classes not to make fools of themselves.

A ripple of curiosity spreads through us. Who could it be? Another hero? Someone famous?

Vlad answers, "This is Hitoshi Shinsou—a student from the General Department who will be joining us for this training."

My heart skips a beat. Shinsou. I remember the intense focus he had during the Sports Festival. His Brainwashing Quirk was terrifyingly effective, and although Izuku managed to break free from it, Shinsou left a lasting impression on all of us.

Whispers break out among the class as we all take in his appearance. His costume is simple but striking. The Binding Cloth draped around his shoulders is unmistakably inspired by Aizawa-Sensei, and it immediately draws attention. His face is obscured by a mask, adding an air of mystery.

“He’s really wearing Aizawa-Sensei’s cloth,” Kaminari notes, impressed. Others murmur about his Brainwashing Quirk, how powerful it is, and how Izuku broke free of it.

Izuku, as always, humbles himself. “It was a fluke. I got lucky,” he mutters, brushing off the admiration. But I know better. Izuku’s encounter with Shinsou was anything but luck—it was the moment he first saw the vestiges of One For All’s previous holders. He brushes it off as a coincidence, but I can see the look in his eyes.

Shinsou’s expression is hard, his voice blunt as he introduces himself to the class. “I’m not here to make friends,” he declares. “You’re all obstacles I need to overcome. I’m far behind, and I have no intention of staying there.”

A wave of silence follows his statement, then a few claps break through the quiet. Soon enough, the entire class is applauding. There’s a sense of mutual respect in the air. We’ve all been through enough to recognize determination when we see it, and Shinsou’s resolve burns brighter than most.

Izuku smiles to himself, eager to face Shinsou again. He’s excited to see how much Shinsou has grown since their last encounter, and I can’t help but share that feeling.

Once the applause dies down, Vlad King takes charge again, explaining the format for today’s training. “You’ll be split into teams of four, with one team facing off against another in a capture-the-opponent scenario. The first team to capture four members from the opposing team wins.”

Jurota raises a point, noting that there are 41 of us now, with Shinsou joining. Vlad quickly clarifies that Shinsou will participate in two battles—one with Class 1-A and one with Class 1-B.

“Sounds like he’ll have to work hard on both sides,” I whisper, sharing a look with Momo.

Toru adds another concern, pointing out that one team will have a disadvantage with only four members against a team of five. But Vlad dismisses it, explaining that integrating Shinsou, who has little battle experience, will already be a challenge for the team he joins.

Shinsou, surprisingly, agrees with Katsuki, who claims Shinsou will be deadweight, at least for now.

With that settled, the teams are drawn by lottery. For Class 1-A, the groups are announced as Team Asui, Team Yaoyorozu, Team Iida, Team Bakugo, and Team Midoriya. Class 1-B consists of Team Shiozaki, Team Kendo, Team Tetsutetsu, Team Tokage, and Team Monoma.

Shinsou draws his numbers and ends up on Team Asui for Class 1-A and Team Monoma for Class 1-B. Both teams look excited to have him join, and I can see Shinsou’s determination as he squares his shoulders, ready for the challenge.

As the match-ups are decided, Ochaco nudges Izuku. “It’s going to be a rematch between you and Shinsou,” she says, a knowing smile on her face.

Izuku nods, a grin spreading across his features. “I’m looking forward to seeing how much he’s grown.”

The matches are set. Each will last twenty minutes, and if time runs out, the team with more remaining members will win.

The excitement builds, and I can feel the tension rising as we prepare for the next stage of training. My heart pounds in my chest. This is it.

Mailin, get your head in the game. This is where all our training comes to life.
