Alex and Ember went from house to house, but Alex grew more and more anxious with each step. Every house seemed more familiar than the last.
"You're quiet," Ember said slightly concerned. "Something on your mind?"
Alex sighed, glancing around. "The houses... they're getting more familiar. I think we're close to my place."
Ember started to look around. "You mean we're getting close to your house?"
"Yeah, and that's what worries me," Alex admitted.
"Where is it, exactly?"
"At the end of this street, left turn."
Ember smiled, trying to ease his nerves. "Well, it's still a bit of a walk. Let's have fun for now. Maybe your house isn't even on the route."
"I hope so," Alex mumbled, his anxiety creeping in.
They were so focused on their conversation that they didn't notice the girl in a pumpkin dress walking in front of them until it was too late.
"Hey, watch where you're going!" the girl exclaimed as she fell to the ground.
"Sorry!" Alex quickly apologized, extending a hand to help her up. As she looked up at him, he watched her face in shock.
The girl burst into laughter, clearly recognizing him. "Oh my god, who would've thought I'd have a sister after all!" she said through her giggles.
Alex froze. Of all people, it had to be his sister, Felicia. His heart pounded in his chest, panic rising. "What now?" was the only thought racing through his mind.
Felicia grinned, clearly amused. "Are you coming home as my sister now?"
"No," Alex growled, his voice tense. "And you're not going to tell Mom or Dad about this. Please, just forget you saw me like this," he pleaded.
"But sister," Felicia teased, "now we can braid each other's hair and do all the fun sister stuff!" She giggled, clearly enjoying how female alex looks.
"I'm not your sister!" Alex snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I was forced to dress like this, okay?"
Felicia blinked, her teasing tone softening. "But I kind of like you like this. Maybe we could bond more if you were a girl," she said quietly.
Alex's anger fading as he saw the loneliness in his sister's eyes. He took a deep breath, his voice softening. "Look, Felicia," he began, trying to sound more patient. "I know I haven't been around much, and we don't spend time together like we should. But I'll make more time for you when I'm home. I promise. Just... not as sisters, okay?"
Felicia's smile faded, and spoke, "You always say that, Alex. But you never actually turn an eye for me. You're always busy with other things, never with me."
Her words hit him hard. Not because they were spoken out of frustration, but because they were true. He had been distant, leaving her to her loneliness while he lived his own life.
Alex swallowed the lump in his throat, he felt guilty. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I know I haven't been the best brother. I'll try harder."
Felicia paused, studying his face. "You really mean it?" she asked, her voice soft now, but her expression still guarded.
"I promise," Alex said sincerely, his eyes meeting hers. "But you have to promise me something too—don't tell Mom or Dad about this. Please."
Felicia's eyes flickered with amusement again, but she wasn't ready to let him off that easily. "I'll keep your secret," she said slowly, a smirk tugging at her lips. "But you owe me, Alex."
