The next morning, Alex woke up to the sound of Ember's playful voice. She was wearing a witch hat, and had a mischievous look on her face.
"Hehehe, leave your bed now, or stay sleeping forever!" Ember said, her voice mimicking that of an old lady, adding a spooky flair.
Alex groaned, his voice muffled by the pillow. "Sleeping forever doesn't sound too bad right now," he muttered with a grin, turning away from her.
"Oh, no you don't!" Ember exclaimed, grabbing his arm. Using all her strength, she yanked him halfway off the bed.
"Aaah, okay! Okay, I'm up!" Alex laughed, half struggling, half surrendering.
They moved on to breakfast, which Ember had gone out of her way to make Halloween-themed. Everything was shaped like pumpkins, ghosts, or spiders. As Alex ate, he glanced at Ember, wondering how school would be today. When they finished, he dressed in his regular clothes, eager to head out.
"Shall we?" he asked, ready to go to school.
"Not so fast, I have to do this first. Sorry," Ember interrupted, holding up a tube of mascara.
Alex groaned, already knowing where this was headed. "Do I really have to wear that every day until I get second place or higher?"
"I'm afraid so," she replied, her tone a bit teasing. "Want to go classic black? Or feel like going wild with pink?"
"If you take pink, I'll still go with black," he shot back, knowing how she loved to tease him.
"If you pick black, we're both going pink," she teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Alex rolled his eyes. "Not happening."
"Fine, black it is then," she said, leaning closer with the mascara brush. Carefully, she gave him long, dark lashes, making sure they were perfectly curved. "There, beautiful."
Alex sighed, resigning himself to his fate. It wasn't the worst thing, but it was still something he never thought he'd get used to.
They made their way to school, with Alex blindfolded as usual. The day was a mix of stares and whispers. He managed to hide most of his chest under his jacket, but it wasn't perfect. Still, it was about as close to normal as things got for him these days. At lunch, he sat with his friends for the first time in a while. Grateful, normally they abandom him when they saw him dressed or wearing make up.
"So, Alex, what are you dressing up as tonight?" Max asked, shoveling a mouthful of food into his mouth.
Alex, figuring he wouldn't be seeing them later anyway, decided to be honest. "I'm going as a vampire."
Max's eyes lit up. "Cool! I'm thinking about going as a zombie, but I might change it."
"How boring and typical," Roy chimed in with a grin. "I'm going as the Black Knight from Shadow Souls. Now that's a costume."
Hearing Roy talk about gaming stirred something in Alex. He missed playing video games on his console, the escape it offered. Now, his only "games" were the twisted challenges from the sissy games set up in real life.
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and the rest of the day passed quickly. Before Alex knew it, he and Ember were back at the facility. While Ember prepared for the evening, Alex tried to relax, flipping through a girl's magazine, not because he wanted to but because there was literally nothing else to do. Later, Ember returned, announcing she'd prepared everything for Halloween night.
As they sat down to dinner, they reminisced about past Halloweens. Alex told stories of simpler times when his biggest worry was what costume to wear.
"Well, tonight no skeletons," Ember said a bit nervous. "It's vampire time."
