Alex waited anxiously in his room, pacing for a few minutes before sitting down on the edge of the bed. He sighed, knowing that if Ember took as long as she did with his makeover, he could be waiting for quite a while. He picked up one of the puzzle books on the nightstand, but as soon as he tried to flip through it, he was reminded how much of a burden the fake nails were. Even grabbing the book took several awkward tries. After some fumbling, he managed to start a puzzle, but his mind was distracted, bouncing between thoughts of the upcoming night and the way he looked.
The door creaked open far sooner than he had expected. Ember stepped into the room, looking every bit the witch she intended to be—long black dress, pointy hat, and makeup that gave her a mischievous glow.
"You look amazing," Alex said, genuinely impressed.
Ember blushed at his compliment, and for a moment, she hesitated, her feelings for him surfacing. "Thanks... I'd say the same about you, but honestly, I think I prefer the regular Alex." She smirked.
Alex smiled back, feeling a warmth in his chest. "That's sweet," he said. It reminded him of a night they shared, and for a moment, his thoughts wandered. He wanted another day where it was just the two of them, where maybe he could finally ask her what had been on his mind for a while now.
Before he could dwell on it, Ember extended her hand playfully. "Come on, girl," she teased.
"Very funny," Alex said, rolling his eyes, but Ember's laughter made him smile.
They headed out to the car. This time, Alex wasn't blindfolded, but the windows were covered, blocking any view outside. The drive felt longer than usual, and Ember used the time to explain the details of the game for the night.
"The rules are simple," she began. "We have a set route and can't skip any houses. The goal is to collect as much candy as possible, but you can only take one piece from each house. Oh, and there's a bonus rule—I have to keep track of how many times someone calls you pretty or gives you a compliment. Those points will count extra towards the final score. The person with the most points wins a special prize. And the candy score will decide your ranking"
"Alright, let's win this," Alex said, trying to pump himself up.
When they finally arrived, Alex felt nervous as they stepped out of the car. Something about the area felt strangely familiar. As they walked toward the first house, his eyes looked around the neighborhood, and a sinking feeling settled in.
"Wait a minute... I think I know this place," Alex said, his voice tense.
Ember looked around, raising an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"I think we're in my neighborhood," Alex whispered, his panic rising.
Ember stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening. "Are you sure?"
Alex nodded, swallowing hard. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I recognize these houses."
Ember bit her lip with concern. "Oh, crap. Okay, just... stay calm. Maybe no one will recognize you with all the makeup and stuff."
They approached the door, which was surrounded by pumpkins and fake zombie arms sticking out of the ground. When it opened, Alex froze. He recognized the man standing in the doorway—he was from his neighborhood.
"Trick or treat!" Ember said cheerfully. Alex hesitated before mumbling, "Trick or treat." His voice sounded strained, and the man gave him a weird look, clearly confused by the male voice coming from the vampire girl in front of him. After a moment of awkward silence, the man shrugged and handed them candy. They got their candy and moved on.
