The next day, Xu Zhen prepared books and stationery for Little Beggar and took her to school.
When they registered with the headmaster, he glanced at Little Beggar's household registration and asked Xu Zhen, "Your younger sister? Xu Xiaochun?"
Xu Zhen replied, "Yes, yes."
The headmaster asked again, "Han Chinese, eight years old?"
Xu Zhen affirmed, "That's right."
The headmaster took a deep breath, exasperated, "Do you think I'm blind? She clearly looks like she's of Hu ancestry."
Xu Zhen feigned ignorance, "Maybe there's Hu ancestry in our family history, but our parents were both Han, so we're Han too."
The headmaster was too frustrated by her nonsensical response to argue further.
He stroked his goatee, sat down with the registration in hand, looked at Little Beggar, and beckoned her over, "Come here."
Little Beggar glanced up at Xu Zhen, who nodded in approval, so she stepped forward with a blank expression.
The headmaster reached out and touched her shoulder.
Xu Zhen quickly pulled Little Beggar back, asking, "What are you doing, Headmaster?"
The headmaster crossed out the age of eight on the registration and wrote, "Fourteen."
Xu Zhen was momentarily stunned.
She quickly realized the headmaster was indicating Little Beggar's true age.
Little Beggar wasn't eight but fourteen.
Xu Zhen was shocked and asked the headmaster, "You can determine age by bone structure?"
The headmaster scoffed at Xu Zhen, "The late emperor was fascinated with metaphysics; learning to read faces and bones was essential. Young people like you don't know and find it strange."
Xu Zhen was about to offer some praise when she realized that Little Beggar was already fourteen?
Fourteen years old?
And still so short?
Perhaps it was due to fleeing and living in constant danger, leading to malnutrition.
But still, this was quite short. Would she grow taller in the future?
If she didn't, would she remain a little shorty forever...
Xu Zhen looked at Little Beggar with sympathetic eyes.
"Are you really fourteen?" Xu Zhen crouched down and asked Little Beggar, "Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Little Beggar nodded slightly, looking at Xu Zhen at eye level, and after a while, said, "Forgot."
Xu Zhen patted her head, "If I'd known earlier, I'd have made sure you ate meat every day."
Fourteen was the prime age for growth.
What a pity.
