Upon hearing the words "flower house," Xu Zhen immediately thought of the little beggar. However, at this time, the little beggar should be at the barracks.

She crouched down and asked the student, “What happened to your sister?”

The student, a young girl, had tears streaming down her face, her eyes red and swollen as she sobbed, “There’s little grain in winter, and my father sold my sister to the flower house!”

Xu Zhen wanted to offer some comfort.

The student clutched Xu Zhen’s clothing, choking on her words as she pleaded, “Teacher, you came from Chang’an; you can surely save my sister.”

Xu Zhen replied, “How can I save her?”

The student’s eyes were red, “I... I don’t know. But my sister is innocent. The Emperor issued a decree for equal rights for men and women, but why, why—”

She couldn’t continue speaking.

Xu Zhen comforted her.

The female student continued to cry uncontrollably.

Xu Zhen thought for a moment and said, “I was planning to visit the flower house. Why don’t you come with me to look for your sister?”

The student, seeing Xu Zhen willing to accompany her, clung to this lifeline, regaining some energy.

She nodded, wiped her tears, stood up, and asked Xu Zhen to wait for a moment. She then fetched two horses from somewhere, threw soft pads onto their backs, and gestured for Xu Zhen to mount.

Xu Zhen hesitated for a moment and asked, “Ride horses there?”

The student said, “Of course! If we walk, my sister might be gone!”

Xu Zhen found the student’s words alarming and said no more. She quickly grabbed the reins and, relying on her limited physical skills, mounted the horse. Before she could steady herself, the horse was urged into a gallop, speeding away like lightning. The only sound in Xu Zhen’s ears was the whooshing of the wind.

She opened her mouth to call for help.

The student caught up to guide her.

The horses ran swiftly.

Xu Zhen’s cries of distress turned into “Aaaaah” shouts.

The student, puzzled while riding, asked, “Teacher, why are you so happy riding a horse?”

Xu Zhen felt a deep frustration and nearly wanted to kick the student off the horse.

They finally arrived at the legendary flower house.

Xu Zhen was in a state of disarray, almost tumbling off the horse.

The student said, “We’re here.”

Xu Zhen took deep breaths, unable to speak.

All she could do was think to herself: Little beggar, oh little beggar, while you’re enjoying your time at the barracks, I’m suffering here for your merit points. If you ever dare to mistreat me, I’ll hammer you to death.

With her back aching and her body sore, she trudged inside.

The student said, “Don’t go through the main entrance.”

The student cautioned, “Don’t enter through the front door.”

Xu Zhen found this reasonable, so she followed her toward a side entrance. They passed the woodshed, which was empty, and then went to the kitchen, which was also deserted. The entire back courtyard of the flower house was unguarded and eerily quiet, though intermittent sounds of noise and commotion could be heard from inside the building.
