Under the torrential rain, the weeping willows by the roadside shed their leaves, which scattered across the ground, embedding into the mud.
The vast river and sea roared as a biting cold wind howled, relentlessly buffeting the bamboo carriage and nearly tipping it over several times. The streets were deserted, and occasionally, Xu Zhen would spot someone who had fallen on the ground, instructing the maid to help them up.
After a long struggle, they finally arrived at Hongdu Academy, where the rainwater had already surged up to the first stone step.
Xu Zhen told the maid to wait outside for a moment, then opened her umbrella and dashed out of the carriage, knocking on the large door while calling, "Supervisor! Open the door!"
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
A massive wave crashed against the riverbank, sending strong winds swirling.
The heavy door creaked open slowly, pushed against the wind.
It was the Supervisor who had opened the door.
Xu Zhen hurried inside and asked, "Where are the students?"
They stood in a corner where the wind was still strong, but at least it was possible to hear each other.
The Supervisor's beard danced in the gust.
He chatted, "This rain has really caught everyone off guard."
Xu Zhen was taken aback for a moment before responding, "Yes, by the way, where are the students?"
The Supervisor replied, "They're in the classroom."
Xu Zhen asked, "In the study hall?"
"Yes, the teacher should still be giving a lesson," the Supervisor said. "Assistant Minister, why are you here so early? Aren't you supposed to be on duty at the palace today?"
Seeing that the Supervisor was unaware of the situation, Xu Zhen explained, "You need to send the students home to find their parents and seek shelter from the impending flood; this heavy rain will definitely lead to flooding."
The Supervisor stood at the eaves, pondering, "I'll go ask the Headmaster."
Xu Zhen pulled the Supervisor aside, dragging him away from the rain. The wind howled fiercely, and raindrops pelted their faces as she pointed toward the river outside the wall, shouting, "Look! The water level has already risen to your academy's doorstep!"
Only then did the Supervisor realize, "What on earth is happening with today's rain?!"
Xu Zhen tugged him back inside the building. "You need to report this quickly and get the students home; it's extremely dangerous here!"
Once she finished speaking, Xu Zhen seized the opportunity as the rain eased and the wind calmed to hurry toward the study hall.
After taking a few steps, she noticed the floodwaters were rising, now soaking her ankles.
Xu Zhen was taken aback as she waded through the water. As she passed an intersection, the wind and rain intensified once again, but she managed to find Xu Qianchun's classroom.
However, inside the classroom, there were only four or five scattered students sitting in the corner, reading by candlelight.
Dripping wet, Xu Zhen rushed in. Her hair was soaked, and her clothes clung to her, making her appear quite disheveled.
She called out loudly, "Do you know where Xu Qianchun is?!"
"Step back! Don't get the books wet!" someone hollered from inside. "Xu Qianchun and Xie Aguang went to the archive!"
