Xu Zhen was taken aback by the sudden arrival of what she had long desired. However, now that it was here, she had no intention of turning it away.
A hundred meters away, two armies faced each other in a standoff. Inside the tent, a lantern illuminated the table where the two of them sat facing each other. A servant in a blue robe, brought by the favored concubine, poured tea for both of them.
Xu Zhen, holding her cup, got straight to the point, "Why has Your Majesty come here? Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? I've managed to hold back Li Sanlang's hundred thousand troops with just thirty thousand. In Chang'an, you could use the remaining forces to attack other nations."
The concubine took a sip of her tea, turned the cup gently, and replied softly, "The troops have already been dispatched."
Xu Zhen was puzzled, "Where have they been sent? And I've heard that refugees are attacking the city walls again. Has Chang'an done something significant?"
The concubine smiled, "I'm not too sure. It's all managed by those below me."
Xu Zhen was taken aback by the concubine's approach. It was like those wealthy players who hire others to play games for them. But this managed account was exceedingly valuable, equivalent to hundreds of kilograms of gold. Truly the way of the wealthy.
Xu Zhen had many thoughts but dared not express too many of them. They drank tea in silence for a while, and eventually, Xu Zhen couldn't help but ask, "Weren't you going to tell me about the Xun family?"
The concubine set her cup down, smiling, "I was wondering when you would finally ask."
Xu Zhen was at a loss for words, realizing the concubine's mind worked in peculiar ways. She had come herself but still played these games. Xu Zhen, eager to know, pleaded, "I hope you'll tell me."
Seeing Xu Zhen's sincerity, the concubine's impression of her improved. Since learning about Xu Zhen's relationship with Xun Qianchun, the concubine had paid close attention to her. After all, Xun Qianchun was the younger sister of her dear friend, and it was only right to look out for her friend's sister.
The concubine had been reminiscing lately, and even while chatting, she couldn't help but recall. She thought about how Xun Qianchun's situation was now beyond hope due to the poison. Although Xun Qianchun didn't want Xu Zhen to know, the concubine believed that if someone was worthy, they should learn the truth. Many things in this world are ruined by secrecy, and she didn't want to see her friend's sister go through that.
After a moment of silence, the concubine asked, "Do you know why I'm striving for this world?"
Xu Zhen replied honestly, "I don't know."
The concubine glanced at Xu Zhen and asked, "Maybe Little Chun forgot to tell you, I am her sister's best friend, very close, so much so that—" She paused, then chuckled softly without continuing.
Xu Zhen understood and asked, "Are you trying to give the kingdom to Little Chun?"
The concubine replied, "Indeed."
Xu Zhen smiled, "But she's not interested in such things. Even if you gave it to her, she might not want it. Besides, the kingdom you're managing is in chaos, yet her governance over the North is quite good."
After speaking, Xu Zhen suddenly realized something and asked, "Is that why you caused turmoil in the kingdom and then brought in strategists to manage it? Did you not know that Little Chun had become the ruler of the North?"
The concubine remained silent. The tent was dimly lit, and outside, the sounds of battle grew louder, seemingly nearing the front of the military camp.
Despite the tension outside, the atmosphere inside the tent was relatively relaxed.
