Hu— the Hu people are coming?!
Immediately, chaos erupted within the flower house; footsteps pounded the floor, and a water cup shattered on the ground with a loud crash.
In the distance, the sound of battle cries rang out, and thick smoke stained the sky, transforming the previously boundless white into deep gray and black.
People rushed about, stepping on broken porcelain shards, jumping down from the second floor. The dancers on the platform screamed, while the owner bellowed for payment. The door curtain was ripped apart, and the sound of the wind rushed in like a tidal wave flooding the flower house.
A few scholars stood on the steps, shouting, “Everyone, remain calm!” but no one listened, shoving each other down the stairs in a frenzy.
Xu Zhen felt a pang of anxiety and quickly said, “The Hu soldiers are here; we should find a place to hide.”
Xun Qianchun stood up, saying, “You go ahead first.”
Xu Zhen asked, “What about you?”
Xun Qianchun replied, “I’m going to face them.”
Xu Zhen was taken aback, remembering that the silly girl had already joined the army. Now, with the Hu soldiers attacking, it was reasonable and justifiable for her to fight. She reluctantly said, “Be careful.”
Xun Qianchun nodded and leaped from the second-floor window into the chaos outside.
Longmen was not accustomed to invasions by the Hu, and the lack of preparation was evident. The few capable soldiers who managed to reach the city gate hurriedly deployed a catapult. The Hu soldiers were already advancing close, their formation steady and relentless. Bloodied spears flew through the air, striking the pillars of the flower house with a formidable force.
Someone got their ear sliced and bled, stunned for a moment before they began shouting that they wanted to return to Chang’an, refusing to stay in this wretched place any longer.
Panic gripped the crowd, and hurried footsteps echoed everywhere.
Xu Zhen initially planned to seek refuge directly.
But after taking a few steps, she suddenly remembered she still had a student inside the flower house.
After pondering for a moment, Xu Zhen realized she couldn’t just abandon her student. She decided to go against the flow of the crowd toward the back door, hoping to find her student.
On the official road in Longmen, soldiers clad in black armor arrived.
A row of mounted officers in armor galloped through the vast pathway, brandishing their large sabers as they surged forward.
As Xu Zhen made her way through the back courtyard, taking advantage of the noise and chaos, she shouted, “Hey—” but faltered halfway. What was the student’s name again? Never mind; she continued to call out, “Classmate! Classmate!!”
Snowflakes fell from the sky, drifting into her mouth, and she spat them out, exclaiming "Puh!"
Just then, a servant wearing a short coat rushed past her, and upon seeing Xu Zhen, he glared and shouted, “What are you yelling for?! Quickly get to safety!”
Xu Zhen replied, “No rush! You go ahead; I still need to find a student.”
“What student?!” the servant asked. “Are you one of the scholars here for the competition?” His voice was loud, mistaking Xu Zhen for someone attending the gathering, and he tugged her, pushing her into the inner chamber.
