The next day, the two of them went straight to the military camp.

The camp was surrounded by wooden fortifications, with white tents set up inside, distinguishing between the male and female quarters. Outside, some soldiers were shooting arrows and riding horses, while others stood guard atop the walls. Occasionally, snores could be heard from within.

When they reached the women’s barracks, Xu Zhen asked a soldier basking in the sun whether they were still accepting recruits.

The soldier ran inside to ask a junior officer.

The junior officer then went in to consult a general, and eventually, a woman in silver black iron armor emerged. She scrutinized Xu Qianchun for a long while before saying, “We are accepting.”

It was only for the reserves, requiring them to reside in the camp and practice daily.

Hearing this, Xu Zhen felt somewhat reluctant.

While being a soldier was certainly hard, being away from Xu Qianchun was not ideal either.

After contemplating for a moment, Xu Zhen thought that as an official, she should have some privileges. She tried to negotiate a bit, but the female soldier outright rejected her, saying that only those with a free passage permit could frequently come and go.

Thus, Xu Zhen planned to obtain one for herself.

This permit would likely have to come from a higher-ranking official—she guessed it would be the state inspector.

First, she decided to consult the female officials in the city.

The female official had a visibly growing belly and was increasingly hindered in her movements. She sat quietly on a bench at the entrance, organizing the household registrations for the border city.

Xu Zhen rushed over and announced, “I’m here!”

The female official glanced up from her work, gently rubbing her belly, and said, “It’s not early at this hour.”

Xu Zhen grinned and sat down on the steps beside her, getting straight to the point, “I want to ask you something.”

The female official asked, “What is it?”

“How can I get a permit for free access to the military camp?” Xu Zhen asked, explaining, “My sister, that Hu girl, has joined the army, and I’d like to visit her occasionally. I don’t want her to suffer.”

“Joined the army?” The female official paused upon hearing this and then burst into laughter.

Xu Zhen was confused and asked, “What are you laughing about?”

The female official replied, “This is the first time I’ve seen someone push their sister into the fire. Your sister is a Hu person; you have to ask, what do they want her for in the military? What would the Han generals gain by accepting her into the ranks?”

Xu Zhen was suddenly jolted awake by this realization, exclaiming, “Are they trying to make my sister an undercover agent?”

The female official didn’t elaborate but gazed at Xu Zhen’s expression, eager to see her panicked reaction.

Once Xu Zhen composed herself, her calm demeanor returned.

Now it was the female official’s turn to be surprised.

The official asked, “Aren’t you worried?”

Xu Zhen sat on the ground and chuckled, “Not really; I’m not too worried.”
