Xu Zhen couldn't quite believe it. She crouched down, trying to fathom the ancient martial arts, and was surprised to see that the little beggar's eyes were no longer as blue as before.
"Your eyes have turned black. If that's not inner strength, what is?" she exclaimed.
Xun Qianchun replied, "It's not."
"Then what is it?" Xu Zhen wondered. "It's not like there are contact lenses in this era."
"It's just like moving a finger," Xun Qianchun said, "just a little shift."
Xu Zhen didn't quite get it. "Not inner strength?"
"No," Xun Qianchun confirmed, "maintaining it can be a bit tiring."
Xu Zhen was quick to show concern. "Then change the color only when you're outside."
Xun Qianchun nodded, placing her hand on the door, ready to head out.
Xu Zhen, curious, continued, "You sure know a lot. Can you do that bone-shrinking thing? You're pretty short; don't tell me you're using it?"
Xun Qianchun didn't reply.
Sensing something was off, Xu Zhen pressed, "You're not really using it, are you?"
Xun Qianchun paused, then said, "That skill is hard to learn."
Xu Zhen speculated that she probably couldn't do it but was too shy to admit it, just like when she couldn't defeat those two guards before.
Thoughtfully, Xu Zhen decided not to push further.
After all, she remembered the book describing the little beggar as a formidable villain in the future-a tall, stunning beauty. Even if she was short now, she'd surely grow taller.
The two descended to the bustling inn, which was filled with a kaleidoscope of lanterns. Men and women sat around tables, snacking on seeds and small dishes, watching the bright, lively lights outside.
They stepped into the bustling streets, where even more lanterns hung overhead on countless stalls, with riddles swaying beneath them in the night breeze.
Spotting a rabbit lantern from afar, Xu Zhen hurried over, calling for Xun Qianchun.
Xun Qianchun followed.
Pointing at the rabbit lantern, Xu Zhen asked, "Do you like this?"
Xun Qianchun looked at Xu Zhen, saw the joy in her eyes, and said, "I do."
"Then I'll buy it for you!" Xu Zhen declared enthusiastically.
She asked the vendor behind the lantern, "How much for this one?"
"Five copper coins," the vendor replied.
Xu Zhen paid immediately.
There were many more beautiful ones on display. Since she was about to receive a thousand taels of silver and had some money coming from a girl she had helped, she wasn't worried about funds. She ended up buying several lanterns.
