Xu Zhen ran home through the cold night wind, which gradually calmed her. Snowflakes fell softly on her shoulders as she entered the house, lit the firewood, and then the candle, feeling a sense of security at last.
Yet, the image of that smooth, jade-like shoulder lingered, reminding her of her feelings for Xu Qianchun—someone she had taken in, who was also a villain. The situation seemed inappropriate, and her initial excitement faded.
Disgusted with herself, Xu Zhen questioned her priorities. In such chaotic times, with threats at the borders, Xun Qianchun was focused on her family, while her mind was occupied with romantic thoughts. It didn't seem right.
Lying on her bed, Xu Zhen reflected on her past—before her time travel, and her experiences in Jiangling and Chang'an. She recalled every moment with Xun Qianchun, who, despite being a villain, seemed so endearing.
Realizing she couldn't dwell on these thoughts, Xu Zhen reminded herself that relationships involved two people. Xu Qianchun saw her as a mentor, and she couldn't impose on that pure relationship.
Moreover, in ancient times, two women together would attract gossip. Decisions couldn't be made impulsively.
Xu Zhen sighed, watching the bright desert moon. It reminded her of someone with peach blossom eyes and snow-like bones. Why was she thinking of Xun Qianchun again? She resolved to stabilize her feelings and focus on earning enough merit points for the antidote.
Despite teaching many, Xu Zhen found herself indecisive about her own life. She scolded herself for being useless and tried to maintain a normal mindset, avoiding thoughts of affection. A few days later, she checked her merit points—still at twenty-eight thousand, as she hadn't done any good deeds recently.
Contemplating ways to earn merit points, Xu Zhen realized that fighting wasn't feasible. Instead, she decided to focus on improving the happiness of common people. Wearing a headscarf, she braved the cold northern wind outside. Although rundown, the border area had a unique defense mechanism, making change difficult.
At the city gate, she noticed the silly girl standing motionless with a sword sheath on her back, her face blotchy from sun exposure. The yellow cloth around her neck was poorly applied, without medication. Xu Zhen advised, “If you keep waiting like this, you might fall before your mother does.”
Thinking of Xun Qianchun heading to the battlefield soon, Xu Zhen felt another wave of discomfort.
She squatted beside the silly girl and said, “You know, I have a child at home, very adorable, but I recently discovered that my feelings towards her have changed.”
The silly girl stood still.
Xu Zhen, treating her like a sounding board, continued, “I have developed those not-so-pure thoughts, the kind where I want to possess her, make her belong only to me. Do you understand those feelings?”
The silly girl didn’t respond, not even shifting her gaze.
Looking at her, Xu Zhen recalled the time when she first found Xun Qianchun. Back then, she too had looked lifeless. Fortunately, she had become much more lively since then. She would cry, laugh, act spoiled towards her, and save people in storms.
She was nothing like a typical villain.
Thinking of Xun Qianchun made Xu Zhen chuckle uncontrollably. She spoke a few more words, then got up and left. Talking about it like this indeed made her feel much better, and Xu Zhen continued looking for good deeds to do.
On the way, she encountered a female official resting against a wall.
Seeing her, Xu Zhen cheerfully ran up to say hello. The female official noticed Xu Zhen’s happy demeanor and asked what good thing had happened to her.
