In the flickering candlelight, the aroma of wine faded as Xu Zhen and Xun Qianchun remained seated by the low table.
Xun Qianchun, having set the wine jar aside, came over to join Xu Zhen, adding, "It's not absolutely necessary to go."
Xu Zhen disagreed, "She played a part in your family's exoneration, and she's your sister's friend-practically family. If she's in trouble, we should help."
Xun Qianchun studied Xu Zhen, her brows slightly furrowed.
Xu Zhen asked, "Do you have another idea?"
Xun Qianchun replied, "I do."
Xu Zhen eagerly inquired, "What is it?"
Xun Qianchun said, "I'm thinking of bringing the army from Zhenbei."
Xu Zhen asked, "To fight? Who will command them?"
Xun Qianchun replied, "If the princess wants to attack Chang'an, I'll lend her the army."
Xu Zhen felt a surge of irritation. After their conversation the previous day, she knew the relationship between Little Beggar and the princess was mainly transactional-exchanging medicine and provisions. When the princess left upon learning that Xun Qianchun was no longer poisoned, her demeanor had soured, knowing she couldn't obtain the medicine.
If the princess got hold of Xun Qianchun's army, she likely wouldn't command them wisely, using them only for her own ends. This Little Beggar was quite bold.
Xu Zhen scolded, "You've become a ruler in your own right, but you need to use your brain! If she borrows them and doesn't return them, where will you find justice?"
Xun Qianchun replied, "I'll go find her to seek justice."
Xu Zhen asked, "How?"
Xun Qianchun said, "I'll take a sword. If she doesn't return them, I'll cut her."
Xu Zhen, initially exasperated, found herself laughing, "You've learned to threaten people? Fine, but we haven't fully grasped the situation yet."
Xun Qianchun remained silent.
Xu Zhen continued, "These days, there may be seven kings, but who knows how things will turn out... When the world unifies, it might not be one of you seven who prevails. The Warring States ended with Qin, but the Three Kingdoms ended with Jin. If you intend to hand over the realm to someone, choose wisely and don't waver."
Xun Qianchun nodded, "I understand."
Xu Zhen asked, "So, make a decision-who to support, whether to help, where to go, Chang'an or stay here? I'll follow your lead."
Usually, Xu Zhen was the one making decisions. This time she left it to Little Beggar, perhaps out of convenience. Xun Qianchun seemed aware of this dynamic, pulling Xu Zhen closer and whispering, "You'll follow my lead?"
Xu Zhen nodded earnestly.
Xun Qianchun asked, "And tonight...?"
Xu Zhen interrupted, "I'm talking about serious matters!"
Xun Qianchun chuckled softly.
Xu Zhen huffed.
Xun Qianchun said, "Chang'an it is."
Xu Zhen had expected this answer from the loyal and righteous Little Beggar. She leaned in to give her a quick kiss, then said, "I'll go gather some information."
Xun Qianchun nodded.
She had already made up her mind. During a recent visit to Chang'an, she had spoken with Lan Yi, who seemed detached from worldly concerns and had offered to give her the realm. However, Xun Qianchun sensed that if she accepted, Lan Yi might just end her own life. Therefore, she refrained. Lan Yi had been good to both her sister and herself.
