As night fell, the howling of wolves echoed through the forest.
Xu Zhen, eager to head to Chang'an, urged Xun Qianchun to take her there. Xun Qianchun, however, seemed preoccupied with writing a letter. Curious, Xu Zhen peeked over and saw that the lines were filled with military strategy. She asked, "Who are you writing to?"
Xun Qianchun put down the pen and replied, "Li Sanlang." As she spoke, she handed a piece of paper to Xu Zhen.
By candlelight, Xu Zhen read the letter, which said, "The highest form of warfare is to attack the enemy's plans; next is to attack their alliances; next is to attack their army; the worst is to attack their cities. One must not wage war over a moment's anger..."
The gist was that the best approach in war is to use strategy to dismantle the opponent, followed by diplomacy, with direct assault being the last resort. It seemed Li Sanlang, despite his youth, had recently learned a lot and was advising Xun Qianchun not to act rashly. The letter also mentioned matters related to Ge Xier.
Ge Xier, who had been quite active two years ago, had recently become more subdued. Li Sanlang and Ge Xier had once discussed matters over drinks, with Ge Xier striving to become a king in these chaotic times, merely to prove his own capabilities.
He had once aspired to take the imperial exams, but when chaos erupted and the exams were halted, he resorted to this path to prove himself.
Xu Zhen was deeply moved.
After reading, she set the paper down but couldn't help but express her surprise, "Have you already allied with Li Sanlang and the others? Otherwise, how would they know about your plans to attack the city?"
Xun Qianchun finished writing and put down her pen, saying, "We haven't formed an alliance yet. He knows about my plans because the large numbers of my Zhenbei army have been seen by many on the road."
Xu Zhen asked, "Have you corresponded with him before?"
Xun Qianchun replied, "Yes."
She then stood up to fetch a set of clothes, within which was a bundle of letters, including those from Li Sanlang, Ge Xier, and Xie Guang.
It turned out that this group had been secretly in contact all along, rather than acting independently as Xu Zhen had assumed.
After reading the letters, Xu Zhen felt touched. Despite discussing various topics, the underlying theme was always the plight of the people. Although personal interests were involved, their ultimate goal was to save the world.
They hadn't forgotten their original intentions.
Xu Zhen felt a sense of relief.
"Do you remember when I mentioned that there was an issue in Jiangnan?" Xu Zhen suddenly recalled.
Xun Qianchun nodded in understanding.
Xu Zhen continued, "Right now, Xiao Beggar's whereabouts are uncertain. She could be in Chang'an or Jiangnan, but either way, I think this is a good opportunity."
Xun Qianchun asked, "What do you mean?"
Xu Zhen explained, "I once had her dig for gold, which loosened many mountains, forming a circle. Some of these are right on the outskirts of towns. I'll give you a map, and you can send people there to stir things up."
Xun Qianchun nodded, "Alright, I'll make the arrangements."
She stepped out of the tent immediately.
Xu Zhen remained seated, reading the letters, feeling increasingly moved. Life had become as insignificant as grass.
