Sirius was lost in thought looking at the Slytherin table. It was his younger brother's birthday. They used to have so much fun on this day as kids. They would spend the day in this big oak tree that grew on the Black's property.
The Great Hall's set up had the Gryffindor table and the Slytherin table the furthest away from each other. He was sure his younger brother would hardly notice it from across the room.
Regulus was sitting with his friends and he looked...happy. Sirius knew he should just be glad that his brother was smiling and not alone on his birthday.
"Pads." James snapped his fingers inches from Sirius's ear.
"Did you hear a word I said?" James asked him. Sirius turned his neck so he was back looking at his best friend.
"What? No, sorry." he mumbled.
Peter forced a mouthful of egg into his mouth before saying "What's wrong with you?" But it sounded more like "whhaff's wrong wif you?"
Sirius tried to shake off his gloom.
"Nothing. I was just lost in thought. What were you saying?"
James passed Sirius a copy of the Daily Prophet - the ministry produced newspaper.
"There's a blood moon tomorrow. I was saying I hope Moony is okay."
Sirius reached out for the paper.
His eyes were immediately scanning over the article about it. Before he could say much more. Remus was walking towards them and sat next to Sirius at the Gryffindor table.
"Morning." he said quietly. Remus always did everything so softly. He was far more gentle than any of the other boys.
"Morning." Sirius said tucking the newspaper to the side. "How are you feeling?" he asked Remus. Remus just shrugged and pulled out his copy of his DADA book. He was suddenly very engrossed in it.
Sirius could feel his own foot start to bounce up and down. You may not guess it, but James was always the mother-hen over the group. He gets it from his own mother. After 6 years, they had come to expect it.
But Remus could barely stand James' hovering. If Sirius started to overstep then they might not be able to stand each other.
"We should get to potions. Slughorn will be waiting for us." James said standing up. Peter followed immediately. Peter always did what James said.
"Remus didn't eat breakfast yet." Sirius protested. Remus put his book back in his bag and started to stand up. "That's alright, Sirius. I'm not hungry."
Sirius tried to shoot a worried look at James, but James was lost now. His eyes following after a head full of red hair. "Oh for Merlin's sake." Sirius grumbled but followed after his friends.
The four friends walked to class. James and Peter started in again about something Quidditch related. Sirius pulled on Remus's arm to get him to hang back a step. "Are you really feeling alright? There is blood moon tomorrow. If you don't feel up to class..."
Remus gently pulled his arm away from Sirius. "After all this time, don't you know me well enough to know I'm not going to skip class." It's true - the only time Remus ever skipped class was the day after the incident with Snape. That was a particularly bad moon.
Sirius crossed his arm and held his ground. He felt a bit silly. He felt like a mother trying to force a toddler to eat a vegetable.
"I hate when you guys hover." Remus sighed and rolled his eyes.
"Well I hate when you don't eat." Sirius retorted.
For a moment it was like both boys were holding their breath. Waiting for one to break the silence. "Let's go in." Remus said and started walking towards the Potions classroom, pushing past Sirius.
