Being the youngest members on the team had bonded Y/N and Spencer. They understood each other's need for approval, their drive to work and also what it meant to have limited family in this world.
Y/N's mother died when she was a kid and her FBI agent father had pushed her to do anything except join the Bureau. They weren't exactly close. She had mostly been raised by her grandmother who passed away a few years ago
Spencer was one of the only people she had ever shared that with. And Y/N was one of the only people who knew in detail what Spencer went through with his bi-polar mother.
Without meaning to, they opened up to each other, and one day realized they were best friends.
Y/N couldn't believe their luck they were getting sent to Alaska of all places. She had been fighting a cold for the past two days. Nothing drastic, a small cough and runny nose. But she knew time in the cold frontier wasn't exactly going to help.
This wasn't a job that allowed for sick days and growing up her father wasn't one to let her take them. All she knew how to do was work. She couldn't let the team down. She was going to have to stay under the radar if she wanted to avoid them finding out.
On the flight to Alaska she took her usual seat next to Spencer and they shared some of the case file.
She had to smother some coughs and sniffles, but thought she was holding out okay. Spencer got up without saying anything.
She kept looking at the file and another cough slipped out.
"You alright?" Morgan asked her with a raised eyebrow. "Yeah just a tickle in my throat." she brushed him off.
Morgan went back to listening to his music.
Spencer returned and placed a warm cup in her hand. She looked at him and smiled, but he wouldn't look at her as he sat back now engrossed in the case file.
"Spence..."
"What?" he asked without looking up.
That was so Spencer. To be totally sweet and yet missing the social cue to be thanked. Or maybe he just knew that she didn't want a big deal to made of this.
She leaned over and whispered in his ear. "Thank you."
He nodded and kept looking at the file.
In Alaska, the case had taken an interesting turn. The un-sub was using the blizzard-like conditions as a hunting and hiding playground.
The police officers were nice but extremely understaffed. This one was taking a toll on all of them.
On the third morning there the team was meeting in the hotel lobby for coffee and breakfast. (If you can call stale coffee and dry bagels breakfast). It was Emily who pointed out Y/N's absence.
"I'll get her." Spencer offered as he started to walk away.
"Reid.." Hotch stopped him, but then stepped away from the rest of the group. "Is she okay?"
Spencer shrugged. "I think she's a little run down, but doesn't want to make a big thing out of it."
Hotch sighed. "I want her to rest if she needs it."
Spencer almost laughed. "Yeah good luck with that."
"Just...go check on her and report back to me."
Spencer skipped up the stairs to Y/N's room. He knocked on the door and got no answer. His own room adjoined with hers, so he went into his own room and got in that way.
