One month had passed since the Guardians blessed the people of Mirithis, and the city of Starios had grown significantly in that time. The central shrine now stood proudly at the heart of the city, and the statues of the Guardians in the Central Square had become a place where people gathered daily to offer their thanks and reflect on the new life they had begun to build.
Yet, in the quiet corners of the world—away from the bustling construction and day-to-day life—something strange was stirring among the magical beings who had always been more connected to the elements. The Merpeople, the Sirens, and the various groups of Nymphs had been feeling it for weeks. It was subtle at first—a gentle pull, like the rhythm of the ocean or the whisper of the wind. But as the days passed, the sensation grew stronger, more persistent, until it could no longer be ignored.
The Merpeople's Discovery
It began with the Merpeople.
Caelion, their leader, stood in his living room one evening, deep in thought. Around him were his most loyal subjects, gathered to discuss the strange feeling that had been building within their community. The pull felt like something new, yet old—something that belonged to them but had long been out of reach. It was good, yet strange, a sensation that none of them could quite place.
"Has anyone else felt it?" Caelion asked, breaking the silence. His voice was steady, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his usually confident tone.
The Merpeople around him exchanged uneasy glances, nodding in agreement.
"It's as if we're being... drawn to something," said Alya, his second-in-command. "But I can't explain what."
For days, they had discussed the feeling, trying to pinpoint its origin, but nothing made sense. Tonight, however, Caelion had decided to do something bold. He had a theory, one that might explain what was happening—but it would require him to take a risk.
With a deep breath, Caelion reached for the medallion around his neck—the enchanted object that allowed him to remain in his human-like form while on land. The medallion had always been a part of their lives, enabling them to blend in with others and walk among the wizards, witches, and magical creatures of Mirithis.
"What are you doing?" Alya asked sharply, stepping forward, her eyes wide with alarm. "Caelion, don't—"
"I have to know," he said, his hand already on the medallion. "There's something... something changing in the magic of this world. We need to understand it."
Several of his subjects tried to protest, but Caelion had already made his decision. With a swift motion, he removed the medallion.
The room fell silent.
For a moment, nothing happened. Caelion stood there, his eyes closed, waiting for the familiar sensation of his body shifting back into his aquatic form. But it didn't come. Slowly, he opened his eyes, looking down at his hands, then his legs. He was still in his human-like form.
A collective gasp filled the room.
"It... it didn't change," Alya whispered, stepping closer. "You're still the same."
Caelion was as shocked as the rest of them. He had expected the medallion's magic to break the illusion, to return him to his original form as it always had before. But now, standing here without the medallion, he felt... different. He felt free.
"I don't understand," he said softly, his voice filled with wonder.
Without hesitation, Alya reached for her own medallion and removed it. Like Caelion, she remained unchanged, her human-like form perfectly intact without the magical artifact.
The others in the room followed suit, each of them removing their medallions, each of them staying the same. There was a moment of stunned silence, the air heavy with disbelief.
"We need to test this further," Caelion said after a long pause. "Outside. In the water."
The Transformation in the Water
The group moved quickly to the back of the house, where a large lagoon-like pool awaited them. This was where they had always returned to their aquatic forms, a place of solace and connection to the ocean.
Caelion was the first to step into the water. As his body sank beneath the surface, he immediately felt the familiar shift—his legs merged into a long, powerful tail, and his gills opened to allow him to breathe underwater. He swam around for a few moments, relishing the feeling of freedom in his true form.
But the real test came when he resurfaced.
As Caelion emerged from the water, the change was instantaneous. His tail split back into legs, his gills receded, and he stood on the edge of the lagoon, once again in his human-like form. But the medallion was nowhere near him.
"It's the world," he said, his voice filled with awe. "The magic of Mirithis... it's changed us."
Alya followed him into the water, and the same thing happened. She transformed back into her aquatic form, only to return to her land form as soon as she stepped out of the lagoon—no medallion required.
Throughout the Merpeople community, the same thing was happening. They were no longer bound by their medallions. The magic of Mirithis had altered them, allowing them to move freely between land and water without the need for enchanted objects. It was as though the world itself had accepted them, granting them a new form of freedom.
The Sirens and Nymphs Feel the Change
The Sirens were the next to feel the change. Cythra, their leader, had been experiencing the same strange sensation for weeks, and when she heard about what had happened to the Merpeople, she decided to try removing her own medallion.
Like the Merpeople, she and her Sirens found that they, too, could maintain their land forms without the medallions. The world had shifted in their favor, granting them the ability to walk the land freely and transform back into their aquatic forms whenever they wished.
The various groups of Nymphs—the Water Nymphs, Tree Nymphs, and Mountain Nymphs—experienced a similar transformation. Ondora, Thorna, and Sorin had all felt the change in the magic around them, and when they tested it, they found that they no longer needed the artifacts that had once bound them to their specific elemental forms.
For the Water Nymphs, it meant they could move between water and land with ease. The Tree Nymphs found that they could now travel far from their grounding trees without the fear of losing their connection to the earth. The Mountain Nymphs discovered that the magic of the mountains followed them, no matter how far they roamed.
It was a strange, exhilarating feeling—a gift from the world of Mirithis itself.
A Secret Kept
For now, the leaders of the Merpeople, Sirens, and Nymphs kept this discovery to themselves. They didn't know why the change had happened, and they weren't ready to share it with the others until they understood it fully. But there was an undeniable sense of freedom that came with the transformation—a freedom they hadn't known in a very long time.
As Caelion sat by the lagoon that night, gazing up at the stars, he couldn't help but wonder if this was another gift from the Guardians. Their blessing had been more profound than any of them could have imagined, and the magic of Mirithis seemed to be evolving along with them.
"We'll tell them when the time is right," he said softly to Alya, who sat beside him.
She nodded in agreement. "But for now, let's enjoy this gift."
And so, they kept their secret, waiting for the moment when they could reveal the true extent of what Mirithis had given them.
