during the stillness of the night
i am transported
through vines and shadowed valleys
and a relentless tide pulls me under

the scenes in my mind haunt me
fingers of dread clutching at my throat
my mind twisting together some kind of world
real and fake bleeding together

i fight against invisible enemies
thrashing wildly in my sleep
chaos threatening to push me over the edge
but i won't let it.

when i wake, in a frenzy
i can't scream
i can't do anything
i'm powerless

i lie there in the dark
unable to move a muscle
silent tears running down my face
and wait.

wait for the first beams of sunlight
to shine through my curtains
wait for the ruthless nightmares
to stop pursuing me when i slumber

when the sun finally rises
i rise with it, numb from terror
put on my brave face
make sure they don't see you like this
time to fake it again
