" I'm not having my daughter plea guilty. "

Shondie Johnson shook her head abruptly as she sat at the kitchen table with Beulah Simms Wade . Rona was in her bedroom listening to music or online or something. Shondie didn't know what the girl was doing but she knew she was in her damn room until it was time to go to school. Until this mess was over with that was all that girl was finna be doing. School and home. Home and school. It was bad enough that damn snotty principal that was running for mayor Kris Keller had sent her an email saying that " it might be best if Rona stayed home at the present time with all her issues" , that " the Almighty Kris Keller could assist them with home schooling or some such dumb shit". She hated that White bitch with the face like a prune and her own bully sons. Bitch acted like the parents didn't know she had been fucking that gay rapist teacher Skip Sands way back when. Now she was fucking that redneck looking cop that kept trying to railroad Rona. This was why she preferred Dodie Angeletti for mayor or Reverend Lazarus. They were speaking real shit about life and what was going down. Not like that Republican man who thought all single parents were evil apparently and Keller's bougie ass. The one in the chair was alright enough but she didn't think people like him should be in office. He looked too frail to her.

Regina , her other daughter, shifted her eyes at her mother and then back at the thick history textbook she was reading as she ate her coco puff cereal.

" Shondie , " Beulah explained again," the girl is guilty. She told you and me and the cops that she and the Green girl robbed the store for money and laughs. The only positive is that she also said that Tina Green did the store shootings although in the state of Maryland they could just as easily charge Rona with the same crime.  It's looking like Tina might be shifted over to adult court especially if the woman with the baby really is brain dead like I heard. Shame really. The whole thing is a shame. My parents have the whole church praying on it. They know and like Reverend Joy Jones whose fiancee's niece or nephew or whatever is one of the current shooting victims. They're going to do prayer vigils for all of the victims especially Mrs. Mullins. Mama and Mrs. Duncan are raising money for the little baby now. "

Shondie snapped tersely," I ain't finna study all that shit. I don't care about no White lady and her kid. I mean I'm sorry what happened to her and those kids but that ain't my main worry now. My concern is Rona. That Duncan girl ..... how we know she wasn't involved ? If she wasn't, if she's as innocent as Keisha Duncan claims, why she say Rona gave her the gun? Why did she keep it ? I'd tossed it in a dumpster or something. That girl could be lying on Rona to save herself. "

Fourteen year old Regina resisted the urge to both sigh and roll her eyes as she listened to her mother. Her mom was so blind about Rona. Her baby sister was a piece of lying spoiled shit that got away with everything. And , had always been that way. Everyone knew that. Everyone except for Mom  that was. Now , let it be her that had done all this shit...... She'd never get away with it.

Beulah laughed harshly. " Girl , be serious. Nicole Duncan is a victim too. You want me to go up in that juvenile family courtroom to say , what , that this gunshot victim framed your daughter? Nah. I'm not doing that. What I will do is stay here long enough to represent her in court and advise her and you to accept responsibility. Beg the court for mercy as it were. Keep it in juvenile court if we can. She's only thirteen. She'll be out when she's eighteen and will still have a future. Look at the Klein boy that did the other robberies my daddy was just talking about last night. He's out now. I might be able to get her time in a rehabilitation program or maybe if we pray hard enough just probation. But if it goes into adult court and they put the robbery and the three counts of attempted murder, one for a damn judge, on her your precious daughter will be going away a long time. Like years. Decades maybe. You want that on your daughter ? If you do keep talking about she's innocent and Nicole Duncan framed her and all that others mess. If you don't let me help her in the best way I can. "

Shondie shook her head and pouted. " I guess you right. "

She knew one thing though. That Jeremiah Duncan was a piece of shit. Not representing her daughter or even offering one of his lawyers in that cheesy firm of his. Fucking wannabe man. And , after he fucked her too. He just wanted that little punk niece of his to walk away clean. Just like she did when she shot that White man at the courthouse. She really should tell Bliss what happened between them that night.

Then her lips lifted in a sudden smile. Maybe she would. But this revelation needed the perfect time and place. And , it required her staying the perfect understanding maid of honor and bestie to Miss Bliss Jones.
